A revolution in the progress of aviation could result from Rockwell Collins’ recent acquisition of Athena Technologies. Athena Technologies said it is convinced that the time has arrived for completely safe operation of unmanned parcel-carrying aircraft.
Athena bases its prediction on a successful flight test in which it ejected almost 60 percent of the right wing on an F/A-18 subscale model without an ensuing disaster.

IAI’s Gulfstream G550-based conformal airborne early warning & control (CAEW) aircraft is making its world debut here at Farnborough. The aircraft has flown with the Israel Air and Space Force only since February, and its appearance here was not confirmed until a few days before the show.

Future British requirements for missiles and other guided weapons seem likely to be met by a partnership sealed here yesterday. Four companies and the UK Ministry of Defence teamed up for a £74 million ($145 million) assessment phase  over the next year. The companies in “Team Complex Weapons” are MBDA, QinetiQ, Roxel and Thales.

Lockheed Martin Systems Integration has awarded Griffon Corporation subsidiary Telephonics a $71.5 million contract to develop an enhanced version of the APS-147 radar used in the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. Known as automatic radar periscope detection and discrimination (ARPDD), the program will install software and hardware improvements.

The UK Royal Air Force mounted the biggest flypast seen in Europe for many years over RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, last Friday. On the ground, the Queen presented new colors to the RAF and the RAF Regiment with due ceremony, to mark the service’s 90th anniversary. Fortunately, the popular song title came true, and the rain did not fall on her parade.

The Swedish Security Services have detained a man for reportedly trying to blackmail Saab. The 48-year-old engineer was arrested in Gothenburg last Thursday, but AIN understands that he does not work for the company. However, he has “illegally gained access to documents regarding the operations of Saab Microwave Systems,” the company said. The man, who has no criminal record, denies the allegation.

Deliveries of the Eurocopter UH-72A (EC 145) Lakota to the U.S. Army are gathering pace since the first helicopter entered into service in November 2006. Last month the first operational unit received its first aircraft, and the second unit began accepting aircraft a few days ago.

Elbit Systems has been awarded a contract valued at some $20 million to supply Hermes 450 UAV systems to an unnamed European country. The order specifies both air vehicles and complementary ground systems, for delivery next year.\
