Gulfstream G650 S/N 6005–the fifth and final flight-test iteration of the new wide-cabin business jet–lifted off yesterday for the first time, flying for 2+46. The five G650s in the program have now surpassed 1,100 hours of flight testing. On its first flight, S/N 6005 launched from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport at 12:07 p.m., eventually reaching Mach 0.94 and 51,000 feet before landing at 2:53 p.m.

The completion facility is in a former service center currently being used for flight-test operations. Gulfstream expects all G650 assembly and outfitting to be done at the main Savannah plant.

Cessna didn’t resurrect the canceled large-cabin Columbus at the NBAA Convention in October but did unveil a major upgrade to its largest and fastest jet, the Citation X. Dubbed the Citation Ten, the new jet promises to up the ante in the race to field the fastest business jet. That title is currently held by Gulfstream’s G650 with an Mmo of Mach 0.925, but Cessna promises that the Ten’s Mmo will exceed that number.

Bombardier added two new jets to its ultra-long-range Global line, the Global 7000 and 8000. Both new jets are priced at $65 million (2010 $), but each offers a different level of range and size that ­corresponds to its nomenclature. The two aircraft use a similar platform in terms of airframe, engines and systems. The Global 7000 will enter service in 2016, followed by the Global 8000 in 2017.
