Gulfstream Aerospace of Savannah, Ga., announced the creation of annual Outstanding Flight Awards and its first recipient at a press conference at the NBAA Convention on Tuesday. The awards spotlight flights involving superior airmanship performed in a Gulfstream aircraft in the course of business activity and special-mission operations.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the partnership of MedAire (Booth  No. 775) and Gulfstream Aerospace (Booth No. 275), through which the Phoenix-based MedAire has been providing Gulfstream operators with medical equipment, medical training and 24/7 access to MedAire’s hospital-based MedLink Global Response Center. Gulfstream includes the MedAire package with the purchase of each new Gulfstream aircraft.

Gulfstream Aerospace achieved significant milestones for not one but two new models–the G650 and G250–just weeks before the NBAA Convention opened, with both models taxiing toward assembled crowds under their own power for their respective public rollout ceremonies. Both jets are expected to make their first flights later this year and will be certified under new type certificates.

Gulfstream and Israel Aerospace Industries publically introduced the first example of the Gulfstream G250 at IAI’s facility on Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, Israel, two weeks before the opening of this year’s NBAA Convention in Orlando.

Last year aircraft manufacturers were struggling to expand their service networks and capabilities to help a growing number of operators worldwide keep their aircraft flying safely and efficiently. Order backlogs were at record highs and manufacturing and product support resources were stretching thin.

Joe Lombardo became president of Gulfstream Aerospace on April 9, 2007. He also serves as executive vice president of the General Dynamics aerospace group and was Gulfstream’s chief operating officer before becoming president. Before joining Gulfstream in 1996 as vice president of co-production, he served in leadership roles at Douglas Aircraft.

Under bright blue skies on September 29, Gulfstream Aerospace rolled out the first wide-cabin G650 powered by its two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines before a crowd of about 7,000 people at the company’s Savannah, Ga. headquarters. The $64.5 million (2009 $) twinjet–dubbed T1, for test aircraft one–is currently undergoing ground tests and is scheduled to fly by the end of this year.

Gulfstream and Israel Aerospace Industries on October 6 rolled out the new Gulfstream G250 at IAI’s facility on Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, Israel, an event I was fortunate to attend. The G250 has its roots in the G200, which was formerly the Galaxy.

The first super-midsize Gulfstream G250 rolled out today at Israel Aerospace Industries’ facility at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel. IAI is the contract manufacturer for Gulfstream’s midsize business jets, namely the in-production G150 and G200 and the in-development G250, which will replace the G200 in 2011.

BBA Aviation has named Peg Billson, formerly COO of Eclipse Aviation, president of BBA Aviation Legacy Support/Ontic. She replaces Jim Gerwien, who has left
the company.

Danny Farnham has been named president of St. Louis-based MRO and completions specialist JetCorp Technical Services. Previously he was v-p of completions for Midcoast Aviation.
