No one said it would be easy, but Embraer seems to have hit its stride after struggling early on to meet development and certification targets for its new four-airplane series of commercial jets.

In front of more than 1,000 guests, including Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and many of the country’s top government officials and executives, Embraer rolled out the first Embraer 190 on February 9 at its São José dos Campos plant. The airliner, which seats up to 108 passengers, is the largest aircraft ever produced by the Brazilian manufacturer.
At the request of launch customer JetBlue, Embraer has introduced longer-range versions of its 190 and 195 E-Jets. Designated with the suffix AR (advanced range), the airplanes will carry structural reinforcements that allow for higher max takeoff and landing weights. The changes will add as much as 300 nm of range, allowing the 190 to fly as far as 2,300 nm and the 195 to fly as far as 2,100 nm.
New York’s JetBlue added a sour note to Embraer’s generally upbeat 2006 marketing campaign when it acknowledged last month that it will decelerate deliveries of its Embraer E190s from 18 to 10 in each of the next four years. As a result, instead of 72 of the 98-seat jets, it will take only 40 through 2010, then take the other 32 from 2011 through 2014.
