Six professional engineering societies jointly presented the Elmer A. Sperry Award to the developers of the EMAS (engineered material arresting system), which helps prevent injury after runway overruns by stopping speeding aircraft in beds of specially engineered porous concrete. EMAS beds are typically used where normal runway safety areas are not available due to space constraints.

Can an airline ever realistically hope to match the level of service and intimate environment a private jet offers? Silverjet Aviation thinks it can, and in January it launched what it calls Silver Service between London and New York with a dramatically modified Boeing 767-200. It might not be a private jet, but in terms of cabin comfort and amenities, it isn’t far from it, and on price it’s more than competitive.
In a program that started more than 10 years ago, the FAA is now in the final stages of its northeast airspace redesign project, which involves “a wholesale restructuring” of the cruising, departure and arrival routes and procedures in more than 31,000 sq mi of airspace encompassing 21 major airports in five states. The purpose of the redesign is to improve air traffic efficiency and reduce delays, particularly at LGA, EWR, JFK and PHL.
Last month, the FAA approved a $500,000 grant for preliminary engineering work on installing safety barriers at the end of Teterboro (N.J.) Airport’s Runway 1, which ends 300 feet from a multilane commuter highway. The grant comes as a direct result of the February 2 accident in which a Challenger overran the runway following an aborted takeoff, crossed the highway (seriously injuring a motorist) and crashed into a warehouse.
An infrared de-icing system is scheduled to be operational late this winter at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport. The system consists of a large tent-like structure under which an aircraft is taxied or towed and de-iced in minutes using the energy generated by hundreds of computer-controlled infrared heating elements. Systems are now in use at Newark International Airport, N.J., Buffalo Niagara International Airport, N.Y.
Airport surface detection equipment model X (ASDE-X), designed to help controllers spot potential runway collisions, will be installed at 15 airports beginning with Seattle-Tacoma International Airport next month.
A helicopter service connecting Manhattan with New York City airports is due to start in about two weeks. On March 13 US Helicopter will introduce an eight-minute S-76B flight between the Wall Street Heliport and JFK Airport. The company will add services linking La Guardia and Newark Liberty International to Wall Street and the
East 34th Street Heliport later this year.
Delta Air Lines’ planned expansion at New York JFK Airport this summer will include a new three-year code-share deal with Mesa Air Group to fly twelve 37-seat de Havilland Dash 8-200 turboprops from the Big Apple.
US Helicopter’s (USH) scheduled service between Manhattan’s Wall Street heliport and JFK Airport carried 335 passengers during its first week of operation. CEO Jerry Murphy told AIN that he was pleased with the level of publicity the service received and the smoothness of the operation. “It ran like a Swiss watch.”
