Operators now have until October 12 to comment on the FAA’s proposed long-term solutions to the congestion and delay problems at New York La Guardia Airport (LGA). The original comment period was to have ended in the middle of last month. As previously reported, under one plan six GA slots would be set aside each hour for a total of 96 over LGA’s 16-hr peak period of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Currently GA gets 108 slots from 6 a.m. to midnight.
If the DOT adopts “market-based” actions to relieve airport congestion and delays, which it is considering, landing fees could soar for corporate and commercial operators.
It started several years ago when Boeing began selling its BBJ in numbers that the airline manufacturer never expected (25 in the first year, 82 overall since its inception in 1996). Though bizliners are not a new concept, the BBJ stirred some issues that were mostly dormant at North American airports.
The Air Transport Association (ATA), which called the House’s bill “business as usual,” and its various airline members are still pushing hard for user fees. In an e-mail last week to frequent fliers, United Airlines chairman, president and CEO Glenn Tilton requested the airline’s most loyal customers support user fees, claiming that the fees will support air traffic modernization.
Jet Center La Guardia will take over the FBO leasehold at New York La Guardia Airport (LGA) on August 1. Signature, the incumbent at LGA, chose not to re-bid for the contract following a controversial exchange last year with the airport’s operator, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

For the past month, business aircraft operators flying into New York La Guardia Airport (LGA) may have been surprised to see a fresh new name going on the fuel trucks and above the counter at the field’s sole FBO.
Last month, the FAA approved a $500,000 grant for preliminary engineering work on installing safety barriers at the end of Teterboro (N.J.) Airport’s Runway 1, which ends 300 feet from a multilane commuter highway. The grant comes as a direct result of the February 2 accident in which a Challenger overran the runway following an aborted takeoff, crossed the highway (seriously injuring a motorist) and crashed into a warehouse.
Sleepy Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., might get much busier after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey purchases (for $78.5 million) the operating lease for the airport from National Express. The move is intended to relieve congestion at New York-area airports, which are also operated by the Port Authority, “and help us prepare for inevitable population and passenger growth,” said New York governor Eliot Spitzer.
