Sleepy Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., might get much busier after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey purchases (for $78.5 million) the operating lease for the airport from National Express. The move is intended to relieve congestion at New York-area airports, which are also operated by the Port Authority, “and help us prepare for inevitable population and passenger growth,” said New York governor Eliot Spitzer.

As expected, the FAA extended the reservation and slot program under the high-density rule at New York La Guardia Airport. The program, which includes a slot-reservation system for general aviation operations (six slots are available per hour between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.), was set to expire January 1. The FAA has proposed a long-term rule in a notice of proposed rulemaking that would further limit the number of operations at La Guardia.

The comment period on a proposal to continue the reservation and slot program under the high-density rule at New York La Guardia Airport (LGA) has been extended from October 30 to December 29, the result of requests the Air Transport Association, Regional Airline Association, Airports Council International and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The FAA today issued a "proposed order" to keep in effect through at least September of next year the high-density rule at New York La Guardia Airport, including the slot reservation program, that is now scheduled to expire on January 1.

The FAA last month issued a proposed order to extend through at least next September the high-density rule at New York La Guardia Airport (LGA), including the general aviation slot reservation program, which is now scheduled to expire on January 1. The agency last month proposed a new rule for public comment to maintain the high-density rule at LGA.

A new traffic control rule proposed by the FAA for New York La Guardia Airport would replace the current system of slot allocation with “operating authorizations,” a mechanism that would allow the authority to exclude airlines that fly too many regional jets.

FBO chain SheltAir last month finished building its executive terminal at Isla Grande Executive Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FBO, which opened for business in San Juan last summer, said the new terminal features “state-of-the-art amenities.” In addition to San Juan, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based SheltAir also operates facilities at six airports in Florida, as well as the sole general aviation facility at New York La Guardia Airport.
