As news about precision area navigation (more commonly referred to as PRnav) in Europe starts showing up in the aviation press, chief pilots and maintenance managers are asking how it will affect them and–perhaps more to the point–what it will cost. The short answer is that PRnav in Europe will affect operators as much as they choose to let it.
Bombardier received FAA approval last month of the Honeywell TFE731-20BR upgrade for the Learjet 45 and has started delivering upgraded aircraft–known as the Learjet 45XR–about one year later than originally planned.
Bombardier last month received Transport Canada certification for the Learjet 40, a truncated version of the Learjet 45. The business jet received FAA certification one year ago and entered service in January (see story at right). At press time, nine Learjet 40s were in service.
Since the pre-owned market began to back off from its massive inventory figure nearly a year-and-a-half ago, much focus has been given to the movers, which for the most part have been just about every late-model current-production aircraft. Bombardier has merged its Asia/Pacific and European Flexjet block-charter programs into a new London-based Flexjet International operation. The service will also have an office in Hong Kong and is being led by Judith Moreton, who was appointed managing director of Flexjet Europe last October.

Delta AirElite Business Jets is celebrating its 20th year of business aircraft charter and management, and remains the only business jet provider owned by a major airline. The Cincinnati-based company has been in business since 1984, originally as part of regional airline carrier Comair and then as a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines following its acquisition of Comair in January 2000.
An upgrade to the General Electric J85 engine in U.S. Air Force T-38 trainers has led a Denison, Texas firm to launch a “total upgrade” for Learjet 23s, 24s and 25s, whose GE CJ610 powerplants are a civilian version of the J85 military engine. The program is being offered by Best Jets, a new company established by the owners of Best AeroNet fuel brokers at Grayson County Airport.
