Resembling a turbine engine, the pre-owned market in the first quarter of last year sucked wind. What a difference a year makes. All of a sudden everyone needs a corporate jet, demand that is pushing inventory levels of pre-owned stock lower and delivery dates of many new aircraft out farther. There are about 50 fewer aircraft available today than there were this time last year.
FlightSafety has added Learjet 35/35A and King Air 350 simulators to its training facility at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The FAA level-C device for the Learjet features FlightSafety’s Vital VIII daylight visual system. FlightSafety Atlanta is also equipped with simulators for the Learjet 31A, 45 and 60, and the King Air 200.
Bombardier delivered its first corporate-owned Challenger 300 to Dean Phillips Inc., a multi-services company based in Quincy, Ill. A Bombardier customer since 1993, Dean Phillips also operates a Learjet 60. Company president Dean Phillips and his wife both have Learjet type ratings. They have also received training to fly the super-midsize business jet.
Gates Learjet 35A, New Castle, St. Kitts and Nevis, July 13, 2004–Learjet N829CA, en route VFR from St. Maarten, hit the perimeter fence on approach to Runway 10 at Vance W. Amory Airport, New Castle, St. Kitts and Nevis, sustaining substantial damage. Both wings were damaged, and the left engine partly dislodged from the fuselage and the left fuel tank ruptured. Weather was unknown and there were no injuries.
West Star Aviation, of Grand Junction, Colo., has been around for more than five decades. It was originally known as Monarch Aviation and began as an aviation sales and service business in 1952. In 1987 the Bueschers, a local family, acquired the assets from Monarch Aviation and renamed the business West Star Aviation.
Premier Turbines, a division of Dallas Airmotive, has added -20, -40 and -60 models to its TFE731 Core Zone Inspections (CZI) program. As a result, the company now offers CZIs on all TFE731 turbofan engines. Neosho, Mo.-based Premier, a Honeywell authorized heavy maintenance facility since 1996, has also modified an engine test cell to support this program.
Jim Ziegler, v-p and general manager of Bombardier business aviation services, and Keith Miller, v-p of engineering for Learjet in Wichita, have left Bombardier Aerospace. Ziegler’s decision to leave the company was based on personal reasons, and he plans to remain in the Wichita area. Miller had scheduled his retirement before Bombardier’s major restructuring began earlier this year and will relocate to Florida.
Avcon Industries of Olathe, Kan., has obtained group approval for its RVSM upgrade for the Learjet 24 and 25, including models with various wing modifications. The retail price of the modification is $156,975, including a functional test flight.
At press time, Bombardier Aerospace expected to have delivered six copies of its newest business jet, the Learjet 40. In January the company delivered the first batch of Learjet 40s–two went to U.S.-based operators, two entered service with Bombardier’s Flexjet fractional-ownership program, one was delivered to a corporate operator based in Germany and the manufacturer expected to hand over one more before the end of last month.
The European business aviation community is mourning the death of one of its pioneers following the November 29 passing of Abelag Aviation founder Andre Ganshof van der Meersch. Born in 1927, the Belgian entrepreneur established the FBO in 1964 and remained chairman of its board until his retirement just a few years ago.
