AOG Air Support of Kelowna, B.C., Canada is undertaking a program to convert Cessna 208 Caravans from their original 675-shp P&WC PT6 to the 751-shp Walter M601E turning a five-blade Avia propeller. The company, which expects to complete the program in about 12 months, said the Czech engine and propeller will improve the turboprop single’s performance on both wheels and floats. Conversions are expected to cost $400,000.
If you’re looking for evidence the single-engine turboprop is an aircraft whose time has come, Comp Air Aviation (Booth No. 8842) believes its Comp Air 12 is exhibit A. Powered by a 1,650-hp Honeywell TPE331-14GR engine, the Comp Air 12 is voluminous composite eight-place aircraft with a projected cruise speed of 310 knots at 30,000 feet and a maximum range of 2,535 nm with IFR reserves.
Comp Air continues to fly the Comp Air 12 proof-of-concept prototype while the company works with “potential investor groups and experienced engineering and production resource teams to execute the 36-month certification and production startup.” The large single-engine turboprop, powered by a 1,650-shp Honeywell TPE331-14GR, has undergone systems and handling characteristics tests and performance validations, according to Comp Air CEO Ron Luec
Honeywell will discuss the status of much of its product line, from engines and APUs to avionics, this afternoon and again tomorrow morning in a series of maintenance and operations sessions. A general session introducing the theme “Engage Honeywell for Service” will begin at 1 p.m.
Of all the sub-segments of the general aviation market, the turboprop field is the only one not experiencing a marked increase of new development. At airshow after airshow, very light jets, personal single-engine jets, more powerful piston singles and light sport airplanes have garnered the greatest amount of attention.
Honeywell announced recently that it had won approval for its TPE331-12JR turboprop to be installed on the Cessna Caravan. The certification was completed in connection with Aero Twin in Anchorage, Alaska, which plans to offer complete retrofit kits, installation and service.
Australia’s Civil Aviation Authority (CASA) has grounded several Cessna 441 Conquest II turboprops, citing the potential for in-flight structural failures on aircraft that have surpassed 22,500 hours. CASA stated that the defect, located near the rear pressure dome, could cause the tail to separate during flight.
Neosho, Mo.-based CD Aviation Services (CDAS) has opened an office in Sweden. It will be staffed by Marko Huhtaniska, who will be responsible for sales and service support throughout the EU.
