Honeywell has delivered the first production TPE331-12JR-701S turboprop powerplant to Aero Twin in Anchorage, Alaska, for its “850 Caravan” re-engine modification program. The 850-shp engine, certified last September, will replace the original 675-shp P&WC PT6 on the big Cessna single. Aero Twin expects to receive an STC for the conversion this spring.
Kansas City Aviation Center’s Chesterfield, Mo. facility has been given an FAA Part 145 designation. Midwest Aviation Center (MWAC) was established last August by KCAC on Spirit of St. Louis Airport. The facility is approved for all small aircraft, the Pilatus PC-12 and Piper Malibu/Meridian series, King Air 200 and Citation 500 series. It is also approved to service most Continental and Lycoming engines as well as the TPE331, PT6 and JT15.
ATG’s Javelin, a sporty contender in the VLJ market with its two engines and military-looking canted vertical stabilizers, will need the FAA to grant special conditions to achieve certification. The FAA is proposing special conditions that would become part of the Javelin’s type certification basis, due to the location of the airplane’s engines.
Merritt Island, Fla.-based Comp Air recently unveiled plans to certify its 10-seat, all-composite Comp Air 12 turboprop single. The Honeywell TPE331-14GR-powered airplane is expected to enter flight testing in the fourth quarter, with certification slated for 2009.
The father and son team of Jim and Mark Matheson marked the advances in fleet support for the Twin Commander Aircraft, since their acquisition of the company last November 1. In that first year, the Mathesons have aimed to preserve or even increase value for Twin Commander owners.
“Serving out-of-production aircraft is a challenge,” said Jim Matheson at NBAA’06. “We want to maintain the level of owner satisfaction.”
Sometimes you just outgrow a name, as Kelner Turbine did. As of September the company is rebranded to CD Aviation Services. According to a company spokesman, the name change accompanies the introduction of a new facility in Calgary, Alberta.
Landmark Aviation, the only Honeywell-authorized service center for TPE331-10 engine conversions, has developed a “value calculator” to quantify to aircraft owners how increased power and speed and lower fuel burn from the conversion produce operational benefits and cost savings that quickly offset up-front costs.
On September 1, Kelner Turbine of Neosho, Mo., changed its name to CD Aviation Services, while adding a new Canadian facility to be located in Calgary, Alberta. The re-branded CD Aviation Services is an approved station under FAA and EASA rules. The company provides maintenance and repair services for the Honeywell TPE331 and TFE731 series engines, and Honeywell/Sundstrand auxiliary power units.
Dallas Airmotive (DAI) last month signed two contracts with Pacific Turbines Brisbane (PTB) of Brisbane, Australia. The contracts appoint PTB as sales representative for Dallas Airmotive in Australia and the surrounding region, and as a Dallas Airmotive authorized service center.
Honeywell’s business aviation segment recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the TPE331 turboprop at its Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport facility. Since the first of the line entered service in 1965 on the military OV-10 Bronco, the TPE331, along with the TFE731 turbofan, has been a mainstay of the Garrett/AlliedSignal/ Honeywell engine business.
