The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive for all Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114 and PT6A-114A turboprop engines. It requires initial and repetitive borescope inspection of compressor turbine blades (CT), and the removal from service of blades that fail inspection. This AD was prompted by several incidents of CT blade failure, causing power loss and engine failure. The purpose of the AD is to prevent failure of CT blades, which could result in damage to the engine and the airplane.

South African defense company Paramount reported on August 13 the first flight of its Advanced High-performance Reconnaissance Light Air Craft (AHRLAC). The twin-boom, tandem-seat, push-prop design, powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-66B turboprop, has been under development since September 2011.

Algar Aviation is here at LABACE 2014 showing the Daher-Socata TBM 900, the latest member of the TBM family of single-turboprop business airplanes. Algar is the exclusive distributor of the TBM 900 in Brazil.

To date, Algar has sold five TBM 900s in Brazil. The aircraft on display in São Paulo is the first example to arrive in the country. There are now 23 TBM airplanes based in Brazil.

Piaggio Aero’s new Avanti Evo aircraft is making its first appearance outside Europe this week at the LABACE show. The new model has been designed to deliver improved performance and a quieter ride–both inside and out–compared with the existing Avanti II twin turboprop. The Evo is being shown here at Congonhas Airport in the static display area of the Italian airframer’s Brazilian distributor Algar Aviation.

Nextant Aerospace’s G90XT King Air C90A remanufacturing program is steps closer to reaching expected certification later this year, with installation of new GE H75 engines under way and unveiling of the turboprop’s new instrument panel last week at EAA AirVenture 2014.

Engine modification firm Blackhawk announced a deal with maintenance program provider Jet Support Services Inc. (JSSI) at EAA AirVenture 2014 yesterday that will give customers the option of upgrading to new Blackhawk conversions in place of standard overhauls. Under the deal, JSSI will contribute to the value of the overhaul while customers would make up the difference in price.

Vector Aerospace Africa engine repair and overhaul facility, located in Lanseria, South Africa, has been appointed a designated overhaul facility for the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-140 engine. Located on Lanseria International Airport near Johannesburg, the MRO is a P&WC distributor and designated overhaul facility for other PT6A engine models and offers mobile repair team support for a range of additional P&WC powerplants.The facility also holds approvals from Rolls-Royce, Turbomeca, General Electric and Honeywell.

Aircraft Structures International (ASIC) plans to install the P&WC PT6A-140 turboprop in the Cessna Grand Caravan and the original Caravan with STCs in place by year-end. Branded the Ultimate Caravan, it will provide owners of older Caravans performance similar to that of the Cessna Grand Caravan EX, according to ASIC.

From the standpoint of aerodynamics, there aren’t many ways to make a modern airplane a lot better in a single bound, but as computers gain power smart designers can eke out subtle gains and combine them to extract more performance, which is what the engineering team at Daher-Socata has done with the already successful TBM single-engine turboprop line.

The Aviation Alliance’s plan to remanufacture Cessna 421s and Gulfstream GIIIs is moving forward, according to managing director Geoff Miller, despite financial setbacks that have caused delays. Some people, such as former Cessna CEO Jack Pelton, and partners are no longer associated with the Alliance, and a new source of funding had to be found. “That’s why there was a hesitation in the cash flow,” Miller told AIN.
