Honeywell has entered the detailed design phase of the satellite communications (satcom) system hardware it is developing for Inmarsat’s new Global Xpress Ka-band satellite network. The company aims to secure Inmarsat network access approval for the satcom system in 2014.
Barco has introduced a new 12-inch primary flight display designed for business jet cockpits. Weighing only 4.5 pounds (the lightest in its class, the company claims), the DU-1200 was tailor-made for Honeywell’s upgraded Apex cockpit suite and is slated to enter service next year.
With the Paris Air Show as a backdrop, Rockwell Collins launched HeliSure, a line of situational awareness products for helicopters operating in increasingly congested and hazard-filled airspace. HeliSure delivers sensor data in real time through an intuitive user interface that features 3-D visualization.
The first two products of the HeliSure line are the helicopter synthetic vision system (H-SVS) and helicopter terrain awareness and warning system (H-Taws), which have been selected by AgustaWestland for the AW149, AW189, AW101 and AW169.
Constant Aviation has completed the installation of Rockwell Collins’s Ascend informational management server on three Challenger 605s. “The aircraft came directly from the factory to our Cleveland facility for the installations.
Start-up aircraft manufacturer Flaris (Hall 4 F16) surprised attendees at the Paris Air Show by displaying a prototype of its heretofore unannounced five-place, single-engine very light jet–dubbed the LAR 01–at its exhibit booth. The aircraft that’s on display (registered as SP-YLE) has already completed low-speed taxi tests and, following the airshow, will soon start high-speed ground testing before making its first flight by year-end, Flaris sales manager Anthony Krol told AIN. EASA and FAA Part 23 certification is expected in late 2015, he said.
L-3 Aviation Products announced that it has established a presence in India and that AgustaWestland has selected L-3’s Trilogy electronic standby instrument for new production A119 helicopters.
In February, L-3 (Chalet A306, Static E170) had announced plans to add “technical support for its customers, engineering oversight for programs and expanded business development coverage” at the India Air Show in February. “The local presence advances L-3’s long-term business growth in the emerging Indian aerospace sector, as well as the region,” according to L-3.
By the end of June, Kelly Ortberg, currently president of Rockwell Collins, will transition into the CEO seat following the retirement of chairman and CEO Clay Jones. Ortberg, 52, has worked for Rockwell Collins (Chalet B19, Hall2b,Stand D108) for the past 26 years, including running both the commercial aviation and government businesses as COO.
Is the new Pilatus PC-24 a light or midsize jet? That’s the question that baffled EBACE (European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition) attendees ever since the twinjet was revealed on May 21. On one hand, the aircraft’s 17,650-pound mtow, nearly identical to that of the Embraer Phenom 300, places it firmly in the light jet category; but its 501-cu-ft cabin volume suggests it is midsize, since it is well above the 325 cu ft in the Phenom.
Under a memorandum of agreement signed on June 4, Rockwell Collins and Avic subsidiary Beijing Bluesky Aviation Technology will form a joint venture to design, manufacture and market commercial flight simulators. The joint venture should begin operating by the end of the year, pending a final agreement and regulatory approvals. Products offered by the venture will serve training needs for regional, narrow- and widebody airliners in China and around the world, including training devices and full-flight simulators.
Rockwell Collins announced today that it will be launching a series of technologies next week at the Paris Airshow that will provide helicopter pilots with “unprecedented situational awareness to help them meet the challenges of flying in an increasingly congested and hazard-filled airspace.” Details about the new offering will be announced on Monday at the show, it said, and technology demonstrations will be featured in the “Helicopter Situational Awareness” portion of the Rockwell Collins exhibit (Hall 2B, Stand D108).
