Garmin has increased the integration and capabilities of its high-definition action camera, VIRB, with Garmin Pilot. When VIRB is used in conjunction with the new Garmin Pilot v6.0 for iOS devices, users will be able to view live video simultaneously in Garmin Pilot. In addition, users can remotely control VIRB with the iOS app, allowing them to start and stop video recording and take still photos. This feature will be available in split-screen mode, so pilots can simultaneously view their moving-map display in Garmin Pilot while also controlling VIRB.
Garmin has released a free software upgrade–version 6.21–which increases the capability of its G500/G600 flight displays. The G600 version is available immediately, while the G500 version will be released in February. Some new capabilities include control of altitude preselect for KFC 200/250 autopilots using the G500/G600 when paired with a GAD 43e autopilot interface adapter; provision of basic GWX 70 weather radar functions; support of Cessna 400B/800B/1000 IFCS autopilots (when paired with a GAD 43e); and flight director display with Century IV/41/2000 autopilots.
Cessna Aircraft marked an early New Year celebration yesterday with the first deliveries of both the Citation M2 and the Citation Sovereign+. The $4.395 million M2 is a derivative of Cessna’s CJ1 and retains the same C525 type designation as the aircraft from which it is derived. Featured are such major upgrades as winglets, the new Intrinzic cockpit powered by Garmin G3000 touchscreen avionics, a restyled cabin and cockpit and new Williams International FJ44-1AP-21 engines.
Bell Helicopter will build its new short light single (SLS) helicopter at Lafayette Regional Airport in Louisiana, the company announced on Tuesday.
Garmin released software updates yesterday for GLO, a remote GPS/Glonass sensor for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, that adds new capabilities. Originally, GLO could provide accurate GPS data to one device via Bluetooth. With the latest software update, GLO can connect via Bluetooth with up to four devices simultaneously. A few changes have also been made to the functionality of the power button, which will now reduce the likelihood of GLO inadvertently turning on when stored in a flight bag.
Garmin unveiled interactive, web-based pilot training for the G5000 integrated flight deck today. The self-paced lessons help pilots streamline their initial flight training with the G5000 and offer a convenient online course for follow-on training.
According to Garmin, the G5000 “eLearning” program, available as a 180-day subscription, is interactive and helps customers take advantage of all the features of the integrated flight deck. The course has three learning modes: demonstration, guided interaction and solo.
Canadian avionics installation company Maxcraft Avionics has received supplemental type certificates for installation of a variety of Garmin products in the Beechcraft King Air 200 and B200. The STCs cover Garmin’s new digital GWX 70 weather radar, GTS 850 Tcas I and GTX 330 mode-S transponder as well as Bendix/King’s KR87 ADF and PS Engineering’s PMA-7000 audio system. Maxcraft, which is based in Vancouver, also holds approvals for installation of Garmin primary and multifunction displays, and the new STC’d products can be installed along with the displays.
It still seems unusual to climb into the cockpit of a sophisticated modern jet like Bombardier’s rejuvenated Learjet 75 and find a Garmin suite instead of a panel full of Honeywell or Rockwell Collins avionics. It isn’t hard to figure out; there are no flight management system control display units in the Learjet 75’s pedestal. Indeed, it seems that the concept of the standalone FMS has been banished from the jet’s Bombardier Vision (Garmin G5000) flight deck.
Twin Commander Aircraft (Booth No. C9432) announced that authorized service center Eagle Creek Aviation Services of Indianapolis has completed a third Grand Renaissance Commander for the Colombian Army. The 690B had sat idle for three years before being ferried to Eagle Creek for the 10-month modification and refurbishment.
Piper Aircraft is launching a new initiative here at NBAA to promote its flagship Meridian single-engine turboprop as a business aircraft. The six-seat, $2.176 million M-Class Meridian features a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-42A 500 shp engine and Garmin G1000 glass panel avionics. Top cruise speed is 260 knots and maximum range is 1,000 nm.
