NBAA 2011 opening general session ribbon cutting ceremony.

A roster of aviation and political luminaries welcomed an energized crowd to the NBAA 2011 opening general session this morning at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Joining NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen onstage were U.S. Senator Joseph Manchin III (D-W.Va.), FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, NTSB chairman Deborah Hersman, Dave Everitt, presidetn of John Deere Agricultural and Turf Division, and former U.S. Senate majority leader Bill Frist of Tennessee. In opening remarks Bolen announced that the 64th annual gathering had more display aircraft, more exhibitors and already more registered attendees than last year’s convention.

The Corporate Angel Network (CAN) will once again be the beneficiary of NBAA’s charity benefit dinner/dance, set for tomorrow in the Grand Ballroom of the Bellagio Hotel from 6 to 11 p.m. The organization arranges free flights to treatment for cancer patients in available seats on corporate aircraft. The event will feature dinner, live and silent auctions and a concert by the Beach Boys.

Convergent Performance CEO Dr. Tony Kern has spent much of his life seeking to improve human factors in aviation. So when the NTSB put “unprofessionalism” of flight crews on its “Most Wanted” list, Kern pledged to work to remove this from the list. And so he started the Aviation Professionals pledge and has set a goal of 10,000 signatories by next year.

James Cannon

This year’s winner of the NBAA John H. Winant Award is James Cannon, whose latest project is a textbook on business aviation, written with Dr. Frank Richey of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Called Practical Applications in Business Aviation Management, the book is to be published in November and become a text for graduate students studying business aviation management.

Don Spruston, director general of the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC), is the 2010 recipient of the NBAA John P. “Jack” Doswell Award, granted each year for lifelong individual achievement in supporting business aviation. Spruston has been director general of the IBAC since 1999.
