In a surprise move, the U.S. Air Force revealed today that it will take “corrective action” on the light air support (LAS) aircraft contract. The Air Force had earlier announced the contract would be awarded to Sierra Nevada, a U.S. company that partnered with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer to offer the E-314 Super Tucano.

GA Aircraft Shipments Fall; Outlook Better for 2012

While general aviation aircraft billings rose marginally last year by 0.4 percent, to $19.1 billion, shipments declined by 3.5 percent to 1,865 aircraft, according to data released yesterday by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). This data omits fourth-quarter deliveries and billings for Hawker Beechcraft in both 2010 and 2011, since the Wichita aircraft manufacturer will not release fourth-quarter 2011 figures until late next month.

Hawker Beechcraft has sold a pair of Hawker 900XP midsize business jets to Jakarta, Indonesia-based Lion Air, with options for two more. The airline says it intends to use the jets to meet growing demand for executive charter services throughout Asia. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery in the second and third quarters of this year.

Hawker Beechcraft announced today that Robert S. “Steve” Miller has been appointed CEO and that former Hawker Beechcraft CEO Bill Boisture “will remain as chairman of its operating subsidiary, Hawker Beechcraft Corporation.” Miller is currently chairman of American International Group and a director at Symantec. Miller was instrumental in the turnaround of Chrysler in the early 1970s and many companies since then. He is author of the book The Turnaround Kid: What I Learned Rescuing America’s Most Troubled Companies.

Hawker Beechcraft chairman and CEO Bill Boisture announced in a letter to employees on Dec. 2, 2011, that “we have determined that the prudent management decision is to slow the pace of the completion of the Hawker 200 certification program until indicators reflect a healthier light jet market.”
