Apex Manufacturing and its owner, Jack Harootunian, 48, have been indicted on mail fraud charges for illegally selling substandard and counterfeit helicopter parts to the U.S. military, resulting in the temporary grounding of 154 Sikorsky-built Black Hawks. If convicted, Harootunian could face up to 10 years in federal prison, and the company could face up to $1 million in fines and up to five years on probation, U.S.

Asked to visualize an environmentally “green” helicopter, most of us would think of a rotorcraft that was quiet. Given some more thought, the idea of a helo whose engines developed minimal polluting emissions might spring to mind.

For years the aeromedical helicopters based in and around New York City and Washington have trained for massive urban disasters. Perhaps not as massive as the holocaust that the World Trade Center became–who could have imagined such a combination of terrorist act and terrifying high-rise fire climaxed by a multiple building collapse of geologic proportions?–but the kind of catastrophes big cities attract.

Sikorsky announced Tuesday that the kingdom of Bahrain had signed a letter of acceptance for nine  Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, the first export sale for the variant. Handled through foreign military sales channels, the acquisition is costing $204 million. The UH-60M is the latest Black Hawk version, featuring uprated engines and gearbox, wide-chord rotor blades and a digital, open-architecture avionics suite.

Sikorsky Aircraft of Stratford, Conn. has agreed to acquire Polish aircraft maker PZL Mielec, which will form the foundation of Sikorsky’s European operations. Sikorsky and the Polish government announced the contract during a ceremony in Warsaw on January 10.

Smiths Aerospace is supplying its new generation cockpit voice and data recorder (VADR) systems for the MH-47 Chinook and MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters operated by the U.S. Army’s 160th Special Operations Regiment and the U.S. Coast Guard’s HH-60 Jayhawk and HH-65 Dolphin. Manufactured at Smiths’ facilities in Michigan, the VADR is claimed to be the most capable and reliable solid-state recorder on the market today.

Sikorsky has selected BAE Systems to develop an active pilot inceptor system for the U.S. Army UH-60M Black Hawk program. The new system will replace the mechanical pilot controls on the current UH-60 with active technology that saves weight and provides pilots with intuitive tactile cues for easier handling and reduced workload.
