Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. (Hall 3 D108) is displaying two helicopters at this year’s Paris Air Show that are key to expanding the company’s international footprint, executives said. The S-70i Black Hawk, exhibited outside the United Technologies Corp. chalet A344, is making its first appearance at a major international airshow.
Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. is displaying the Canadian Forces CH-148 Cyclone multi-mission helicopter at this year’s Paris Air Show. The aircraft on show (Static Display F210) was built under Sikorsky’s Canadian Maritime Helicopter Project (CMHP) and is one of 28 CH-148s that will be produced for the Canadian Forces to replace CH-124 Sea King helicopters, in service since 1963.
Starting next month, Canada’s government will take delivery of six interim CH-148 Cyclone multi-mission, ship-based helicopters ahead of 2012 deliveries of the finished version. The interim version will have partially compliant mission system software and slightly lower performance specs than the finished version. The fly-by-wire CH-148 derives from the civil S-92 medium twin.
Speaking yesterday at Heli-Expo 2010, Sikorsky president Jeffrey Pino found looking in the rear-view mirror a fair indicator of what’s to come, and as he put it, “It’s very good.
“We had a great year in 2009,” he said, pointing out $1.1 billion in sales from the Sikorsky Global Helicopters division, another $2 billion from Aerospace Services and a healthy $3.2 billion from Military Systems.
As Sikorsky prepares to deliver its 100th medium-lift, twin-engine S-92A, the role main rotor vibration and other past problems with the helicopter’s main rotor gearbox (MGB) played in the fatal crash of a Cougar Helicopters S-92 off Newfoundland on March 12 remains under study by Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB).
L-3 Communications Integrated Systems has won the contract for a head-of-state widebody executive/VIP interior. A spokesman declined to reveal the name of the customer or the aircraft type, but said work has already begun on some of the interior components. The airplane is scheduled to arrive at the company’s Texas State Technical College Airport facilities in Waco early next year.
New contracts for Canada’s CMC Electronics (A1010) will see the company’s CMA2082F avionics management system supplied for the German air force’s Tornado mid-life improvement program and its CMA2082MH aircraft management systems installed on the Sikorsky CH-148 Cyclone helicopters for the Canadian Forces.
