The European Commission approved the proposed merger of US Airways Group and American Airlines parent company AMR Corporation on Tuesday, eliminating one hurdle to the companies’ plan to create the world’s largest airline.

Delta Air Lines regional subsidiary Pinnacle Airlines begins operating under the name Endeavor Air on August 1, marking the second name change for the airline established as Express Airlines I in February 1985. Operating as a Delta Connection partner since the Atlanta-based major absorbed Northwest Airlines in 2008, Pinnacle became a wholly owned Delta subsidiary in April following its emergence from bankruptcy. The regional airline recently moved its headquarters from Memphis to Minneapolis.

The pilots of U.S. regional airline American Eagle and the management of American Airlines merger partner US Airways have apparently reached an impasse in negotiations over a new contract, potentially delaying further an expected new regional jet order by the “new” American.

The European Commission removed Philippines Airlines from the black list of 278 air carriers banned from entering European Union airspace. Philippines Airlines has been on the list for three years because of numerous safety violations and is the only airline from that country that will be allowed access to Europe. All other Philippines-based airlines remain on the black list.

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 parked at London Heathrow Airport caught fire Friday afternoon, forcing the closure of the airport and sending Boeing shares plummeting on the New York Stock Exchange.

The airport suspended all takeoffs and landings while emergency teams sprayed the airplane with fire retardant, but reopened within an hour and a half.

The management of American Airlines merger partner US Airways has advised American Eagle pilot leaders that it will not place an order for 76-seat regional jets for Eagle or any other regional airline that hasn’t formulated a plan to “trend toward” the cost structure introduced at wholly owned Delta Air Lines subsidiary Pinnacle Airlines, the head of the American Eagle Air Line Pilots Association unit told membership

Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic Airways took the first step toward confronting the formidable threat of the recent British Airways-American Airlines pairing as regulators approved Delta’s acquisition of Singapore Airlines’ 49-percent stake in the UK carrier last week. The acquisition means that Virgin Atlantic and Delta have cleared a major hurdle in their effort toward forming a full joint venture, an antitrust review of which the U.S. Department of Transportation expects to complete during this year’s third quarter.

Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker is upbeat on the market, having ordered nine Boeing 777-300ERs, valued at $2.8 billion (at list prices), of which seven are options. “When we say options, we always make them firm orders,” he said. “Options [simply] give us the flexibility of moving up delivery dates.”

Al Baker said the new aircraft would allow the airline to open new long-haul routes to the U.S. Two of the new jets will be delivered in early 2014.

Boeing fired the starting pistol on the much-anticipated launch of the 787-10 here yesterday, in the process collecting order commitments for 102 airplanes from five customers across Europe, Asia and North America. Air Lease, United Airlines, GE Capital Aviation Services, British Airways and Singapore Airlines form the group of launch customers.

Aviation Partners Boeing has launched the split-scimitar winglet program for the Boeing 737-900ER with an order from United Airlines. The carrier had already launched a similar program in January for its 737-800s, with FAA approval for a supplemental type certificate (STC) expected in October. The 900ER STC should be approved next February. The split-scimitar winglet modifies the existing blended winglet with a new cap section, and adds a ventral strake.
