The mushrooming airlines in India and China were largely responsible for last year’s record levels of airliner orders, and the still-embryonic market for private jet transports in those countries may be about to follow the same growth pattern, Lufthansa Technik executive chairman August Wilhelm Hennigsen suggested here yesterday.
Ameco Beijing–Air China and Lufthansa formed Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Corp. (Ameco Beijing) as a 60:40 joint venture in 1989. Its facilities at Beijing Capital International Airport include a four-bay hangar covering 334,000 sq ft, a 108,000-sq-ft paint hangar, 66,000 sq ft of component workshops and an engine repair and overhaul workshop and engine test cell covering another 280,000 sq ft.
Boeing is here at EBACE floating the idea of adding another new member to its Boeing Business Jet family. The BBJ C would have the same airframe as the original BBJ (that is, based on the 737-700 fuselage and the -800 wing), but what would set it apart is a large cargo door in the side of the main deck. This would allow operators to use the aircraft for carrying bulky items such as cars, horses or equipment loaded in pallets.
New wingtip technology that “will raise eyebrows” is being developed by Aviation Partners and may be revealed at the EBACE show this week. Declining to reveal details ahead of time, chief executive Joe Clark told EBACE Convention News a few weeks ago that satisfactory completion of flight testing could permit him to announce the novel wingtip devices here in Geneva. Boeing Business Jets (BBJ) has been sending out initial proposals for “green” corporate versions of the proposed 747-8 jetliner, for which parent company Boeing still seeks a launch customer. Here at EBACE 2006 yesterday, BBJ president Steve Hill said that a first buyer could be identified within about two months.
Embraer is breaking into the business jet big league with the launch here at the EBACE show today of the new Lineage 1000 jet derived from its 190 regional airliner. The development of the $40.95 million large-cabin model was approved by the airframer’s board of directors last week on April 25 and the aircraft is expected to enter service during 2008.
Hamilton Sundstrand (Hall 4 Stand F13) has announced the signing of a long-term maintenance agreement with low-cost carrier Ryanair. The contract covers test, repair and overhaul for the manufacturer’s products on the airline’s fleet of Boeing 737s. These include electric power and cabin pressurization equipment.
The Comtran jet nozzle retrofit showing here on the Jetran Air MD-82 in the static display makes the airplane compliant with Stage 4 noise regulations, reduces fuel consumption by 1.5-2 percent and extends time between overhauls by lowering the exhaust gas temperature by 10 degrees. Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) has announced today that Spanish carrier Air Europa has become the latest customer for its “Blended Winglet” technology, which is said to offer airlines block fuel savings of up to 5 percent. The operator is to buy up to 21 shipsets for retrofit to Boeing 737-800s, as well as ordering a further 34 sets to equip 34 B737-800s scheduled for delivery between 2007 and 2014.
