EMBRAER EMB-145LR, CHESTER, MASS., MARCH 26, 2002–FAA inspectors found a “baseball size” hole in the left elevator of a Chautauqua Airlines–d.b.a. America West Express Flight 5058–aircraft after it encountered lightning on approach into Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, Conn. All three crewmembers and 14 passengers escaped injury in the incident.

Milwaukee-based Midwest Express has informed Brazil’s Embraer that it wants to delay delivery of its Skyway subsidiary’s first ERJ-140 regional jets until January 2004, roughly a year later than originally planned. Midwest Express attributed its decision to the generally weak condition of the airline industry and its desire to concentrate on the introduction of new Boeing 717s into its mainline fleet.

A virtually stagnant market for new commercial airplanes and a rapidly eroding capital base have convinced German airframe builder Fairchild Dornier to pursue a new “strategic” partnership with another large aerospace concern. “We are cash negative,” said company chairman Charles Pieper during a press briefing on the morning of Fairchild’s March 21 rollout of the 70- to 85-seat 728.

Houston-based ExpressJet became the first airline to operate a scheduled flight with Embraer’s extended-range ERJ-145XR on November 1, when the Continental Airlines affiliate launched nonstop service from Newark (N.J.) International Airport to Oklahoma City and Omaha, Neb., and from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Richmond, Va.

Chautauqua Airlines on November 1 became the fifth regional airline to fly as Delta Connection, when a new 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 took off from Columbus, Ohio, on its first scheduled flight to Orlando, Fla. On the same day Chautauqua began service between Columbus and Tampa, one of three daily round trips between the Delta system’s new city pair.

A Luxair Fokker 50 twin turboprop crashed on approach to Luxembourg Findel Airport on November 6, killing 20 of the 22 people on board. The accident happened just after 10 a.m. in thick fog, with the aircraft crashing into wooded, hilly terrain three miles short of the runway and on the edge of the village of Roodt-Syr.
