The pilots of the Colgan Air Bombardier Q400 involved in the February 12 crash near Buffalo, N.Y., that killed 50 people did not observe the so-called sterile cockpit rule and the captain appears to have violated Colgan Air’s policy prohibiting the use of the crew room to sleep overnight, according to testimony read this morning during the NTSB’s public hearing on the crash.

NetJets Europe has become the first operator permitted to fly the Falcon 7X trijet into London City Airport (LCY), which requires special approval for the downtown airfield’s 5.5-deg steep approach. The fractional ownership provider last year flew nearly 5,000 flights to and from the airport, making London City the fourth most popular destination in the operator’s fleet.
Hawker Beechcraft King Air 200, Salmon, Idaho, Dec. 10, 2007–Control of the King Air was lost as a result of the commercial pilot’s failure to remove ice and snow from the airplane before takeoff, according to the Safety Board. The pilot’s improper preflight preparation, falling snow and a low ambient temperature were factors.
NetJets Europe has agreed to acquire Egelsbach Airport near Frankfurt, Germany’s financial center, for an undisclosed sum. The deal–subject to final approval by the local municipal authorities who own the airport company Hessische Flugplatz GmbH Egelsbach (HFG)–is expected to be completed this month.
The NTSB has dispatched a go team to the site where the crash of a Colgan Air Bombardier Q400 killed 50 people roughly six miles northeast of Buffalo Niagara International Airport at about 10:15 p.m. last night.
Bombardier CRJ700/Cessna 172, Allentown, Pa., Sept. 19, 2008–The NTSB has issued an update on the CRJ/172 runway incursion at Lehigh International Airport (see AIN, November, page 98). The Cessna 172 was cleared to land on Runway 6, where the Mesa Air Shuttle regional jet was holding short for the landing traffic.
Columbus, Ohio-based fractional provider NetJets Aviation last month forged an agreement with the FAA to become the agency’s latest NextGen partner. Under the agreement, NetJets will focus on NextGen initiatives such as area navigation (Rnav) and required navigation performance (RNP) approaches on routes into Teterboro (N.J.) Airport; WAAS, which allows for precision instrument approaches; and data communications.
The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (Natca) has officially added 150 ATC specialists assigned to the flight service option at Automated Flight Service Stations, Flight Service Stations and Flight Service Data Processing Systems sites located in Alaska and at the “weather unit” of the Air Traffic Control System Command Center near Dulles International Airport.
Although Congress is on its annual summer vacation, the battle over privatization of ATC continued at press time. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.) said in a telephone press conference on August 13 that they will fight a proposal in the pending FAA reauthorization bill that would allow privatization of 69 general aviation control towers now staffed by FAA controllers.
Beech King Air 300, Houston, Texas, May 18, 2003–At 9:30 a.m. CDT King Air N2SM was substantially damaged during a positioning flight when it overran Runway 33 at West Houston Airport, Texas. The sole-occupant ATP-rated pilot received minor injuries. N2SM was registered to OSO-RIO LLC of Houston. The aircraft departed William P. Hobby Airport 30 minutes before the accident, with Las Vegas as its final destination.
