The DOT issued a “show cause” notice on Executive Jet Management’s plans to launch a business jet commuter operation. EJM, a NetJets affiliate that provides aircraft charter and management, submitted a DOT application in March to launch scheduled commuter service using business jets to connect Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City. Based on information provided in the application, scheduled flights could start as early as this summer.

The FAA said its notice to tower controllers to review the taxi into position and hold (TIPH) procedure is not intended to end the practice, as the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) alleges. “Basically, we are seeing a small trend of runway incursions resulting from that procedure,” said an FAA spokesperson. “We wanted to raise awareness and see if it is still required.

DE HAVILLAND DHC-8, SEATTLE, WASH., JAN. 19, 2004–At 11:38 a.m. the flight crew of Dash 8 C-GTAQ inadvertently landed on a taxiway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). There were no injuries to the captain, first officer, flight attendant or any of the 32 passengers, nor was there any damage to the aircraft, which is owned and operated by Air Canada Jazz.

The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, has initiated an environmental assessment for extending one of the runways of its airport (OSU) to 6,000 feet from 5,000 feet. The purpose of the project is “to improve safety and provide for more efficient operations of business aircraft,” according to the university, which operates the airport as part of its extensive aviation-degree programs.

Beech King Air B200, Hondo, Texas, Sept. 5, 2006–The Safety Board attributed the King Air accident to the airplane’s running over an unmarked pothole in the taxiway while taxiing for departure from Hondo Municipal Airport (HDO). A contributing factor was the rain obscuring the pothole.

NetJets Europe is recruiting candidates for a new ab initio pilot training program that it hopes could provide its growing fractional ownership fleet with up to 45 new first officers each year. The part-sponsored program will be run by the UK’s Oxford Aviation Training (OAT), with the first 17-month courses due to start in May.

On Monday, April 9, at 11 a.m. Aspen-Pitkin County Airport will be closed to all inbound and outbound traffic for runway rehabilitation. The $11.9 million project includes repaving the runway, installing conduit for a runway sensor system that will allow installation of pavement temperature sensors and runway grooving. The runway was last repaved in 1983.

Raytheon Beech 99A, Milwaukee, Jan. 25, 2007–A Freight Runners Beech 99 collided with a company Cessna 402B at a runway-taxiway intersection after landing on Runway 25L at General Mitchell International Airport. The Beech 99 pilot, who was slightly injured, landed just past the intersecting Runway 19, slowed, and told Tower he could exit at A2 taxiway, which led to A, and he was cleared.

Million Air Columbus at Port Columbus International Airport (CMH), Ohio, has acquired an additional 32,000 sq ft of heated hangar space. The expansion brings the FBO’s total hangar area to more than 121,000 sq ft equipped with doors measuring 120 feet wide by 30 feet high. Some revisions to the ramp layout have improved safety and ground-traffic flow.

Cessna 425, Menominee, Mich., Dec. 5, 2006–The pilot of the Conquest I told the NTSB that he landed and taxied onto the airport terminal ramp at Menominee normally. He brought the props into the Beta (reverse) range while taxiing to control speed. After he stopped on the ramp, he put the propellers back into Beta and backed the airplane about four to six feet to align with a parked airplane.
