Bombardier’s newly constituted board of directors last month gave approval to the company’s commercial airplane division to offer the C Series line of single-aisle jets to potential customers, marking the start of the company’s foray into the major airline market.
At the request of launch customer JetBlue, Embraer has introduced longer-range versions of its 190 and 195 E-Jets. Designated with the suffix AR (advanced range), the airplanes will carry structural reinforcements that allow for higher max takeoff and landing weights. The changes will add as much as 300 nm of range, allowing the 190 to fly as far as 2,300 nm and the 195 to fly as far as 2,100 nm.
MSA Aircraft Products of San Antonio has introduced its Accordia pleated window shade systems for the Embraer Legacy, Gulfstream 200 (as well as an Accordia ultra-light window assembly for all Gulfstreams), Piaggio Avanti and Learjet 35.
Four Embraer Legacy Executive twinjets have joined Cleveland-based fractional operator Flight Options to provide owners with a large-cabin aircraft to supplement the company’s Challenger 601 and Gulfstream IV fleets, as well as allowing Hawker 800XP owners to upgrade. The Legacy Executive is an eight- to 13-passenger business jet version of the Brazilian manufacturer’s ERJ-135 regional jet.
Bankrupt Air Canada last month signed a pair of MOUs that call for a split order for 90 airplanes from Bombardier of Canada and Embraer of Brazil. The transactions, which would include firm orders for 15 Bombardier CRJ200s, 30 CRJ700s and 45 Embraer 190s, remain subject to Air Canada’s ability to attract $4 billion in new investment upon emerging from bankruptcy protection.
The largest member of Embraer’s 170/190 family of single-aisle commercial jets–the 108-seat Embraer 195–took to the air for the first time on December 7 from the company’s production center in São Jose dos Campos, Brazil. The first prototype–a two-seat-row stretch of the 100-seat Embraer 190–validated systems operation and flight characteristics during its one-hour-and-56-minute mission.
Embraer has named Elliott Aviation an authorized service center for the Phenom 100 and 300. The agreement includes routine inspections, scheduled and unscheduled airframe, engine, avionics and other systems maintenance and repairs. The company has facilities in Moline, Ill.; Des Moines, Iowa; Minneapolis; and Omaha, Neb.
The European Union’s new emissions trading requirements for aviation could be imposed on a much larger group of business aircraft than has been anticipated. According to the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), the European Commission (EC) intends to extend emission trading to all aircraft weighing more than 5,700 kg (12,566 pounds).
US Airways expects to launch Embraer E190 service from Philadelphia this month, marking the first application of the Brazilian narrowbody in mainline service in the U.S. Plans call for the dual-class, 99-seat jets to link Philadelphia with Hartford, Conn.; Boston; Dallas; Providence, R.I.; and Manchester, N.H.
Republic Airlines will fly 17 seventy-six-seat Embraer E170s as Frontier Jet Express under a new code-share contract meant to replace and expand service now performed by Seattle-based Horizon Air with Bombardier CRJ700s. The 11-year contract calls for the first aircraft to enter service next month and the last in December 2008. Horizon’s contract with Frontier expires in December.
