The FAA has presented Embraer with a production certificate to assemble the Phenom 100 at its Melbourne, Fla. facility. Previously, Phenom jets assembled in Melbourne were certified under the FAA type certificate granted to those produced in Brazil.
Aircraft components manufacturer Liebherr-Aerospace has expanded its customer service facility in Saline, Mich., by 33,000 sq ft to meet an increasing demand for landing-gear overhauls of Embraer and other aircraft operating in North and South America. The company said the expansion will help accommodate future service on Bombardier C Series and Airbus A350XWB landing gear.
In response to the lawsuit filed by Hawker Beechcraft over the light air support (LAS) competition, competitor Sierra Nevada filed an action in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims yesterday seeking reinstatement of the contract that had been originally awarded to Sierra Nevada and its partner, Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer.
Embraer plans to introduce gradual improvements to its E-Jets over the next three years, including a fuel-burn-improvement package by the end of this year, before the planned 2018 service entry of re-engined versions of the E175, E190 and E195, newly designated as the “G2” series.
International Airlines Group (IAG) has signed a binding agreement to sell Aberdeen, Scotland-based BMI Regional to Sector Aviation Holdings for £8 million ($12.9 million) in cash. The sale includes all BMI Regional’s fixed assets and long-term liabilities, including owned and leased aircraft.
BMI Regional flies a fleet of 18 Embraer ERJ 145s and ERJ 135s throughout the UK and Northern Europe. IAG chief executive Willie Walsh said the deal “should” secure some 330 jobs.
Embraer began taxi tests of Legacy 500 Serial Number 001 at its São Jose dos Campos plant in March. The Legacy 500 program’s fly-by-wire development is on track, said Marco Pellegrini, senior v-p of operations and COO for Embraer Executive Jets. First flight of the Legacy 500 is anticipated in the third quarter of this year and certification and entry into service in late 2013 or early 2014. The 450 program follows that of the 500 but is advancing more quickly as technology and lessons learned with its larger sibling are quickly applied in the 450.
For the first three months of the year, general aviation aircraft deliveries experienced a modest decline of 2.1 percent compared with the first quarter of last year, while overall industry billings shrank by 8 percent, to $3.39 billion, according to statistics released last month by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association.
India’s Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) has signed a contract with Russia’s United Aircraft Corp Transport Aircraft (UAC-TA) to co-develop the 15- to 20-metric-ton-payload multirole transport aircraft (MTA). The pair formed a joint venture, Multirole Transport Aircraft Ltd, in 2010, following an inter-governmental agreement three years earlier.
Embraer recently added hot-and-high approval to an expanding list of operational capabilities of its Lineage 1000.
The high-altitude takeoff and landing operation tests were completed in February with approvals granted in March by both Brazil’s ANAC and the FAA. The certification allows operation at airports as hot and high as La Paz, Bolivia, where the elevation is 13,357 feet msl and the temperature in January, during summer in the southern hemisphere, can top 110-degrees F. The new performance capability will be offered as an option, initially to Brazilian and U.S. operators.
Pratt & Whitney Canada expects to assemble and ground test the first PW800 demonstrator “some time this year,” P&WC president John Saabas told AIN during Pratt & Whitney’s “Media Day” event, held last month in Hartford, Conn. The PW800, which had won a place on the now defunct Cessna Citation Columbus in 2008, lost its only application when the program was suspended in 2009.
