Vista Aviation of Pacoima, Calif., has completed the first helicopter installation of the Avidyne EX600 multifunction display (MFD). The installation was completed in a Eurocopter AStar AS350B and approved under an FAA Form 337. “We have installed quite a few Avidyne MFDs and we were excited about being the first dealer to install an EX600 into a helicopter,” said Bill DeBarmore, Vista Aviation’s avionics manager.

Eurocopter AS350B3, Brownsville, Tenn., March 25, 2010–While returning to base on a Part 91 positioning flight after delivering a patient, the Memphis Medical Center helicopter was destroyed and the pilot and two flight nurses were killed when it crashed in a thunderstorm. Night IMC prevailed at the time of the accident.

Shortly after the devastating earthquake on January 12, Eurocopter decided to participate in the worldwide support of the people of Haiti. Partnering with the Dominican Republic air force, which immediately agreed to provide pilots, Eurocopter donated the services of two helicopters to assist rescue and recovery efforts.

Eurocopter AS 350BA, Doyle, Calif., Nov. 14, 2009–Operated by Mountain Lifeflight, N5793P was on a Part 91 positioning flight when it crashed. The AStar had just delivered a patient in Reno and was returning to its base in Susanville, Calif., when its dispatch received a garbled distress call. A witness saw the light helicopter descending vertically at a rapid rate, and then noted a fireball after it disappeared from view.

Aspen Avionics in Albuquerque, N.M., introduced a helicopter version of its Evolution flight display system called the EFD1000H Pro Helicopter PFD. The $15,000 unit includes an LCD attitude indicator with airspeed and altitude tapes, altitude alerter and trend vector, plus a full electronic HSI with dual bearing pointers, moving map and flight plan overlays.

Appareo Systems of Fargo, N.D., and Eurocopter plan to unveil today a flight-data monitoring system scheduled to be certified for the AS 350 B2/B3 by the end of this year or in the first quarter of next year. Called Alerts Vision 1000, it is the latest extension of Appareo’s Alerts (aircraft logging and event recording for training and safety) product line.
