Canadian air navigation service provider (ANSP) Nav Canada and Iridium Communications signed a joint venture agreement that will eventually give Nav Canada a controlling interest in the Aireon global, satellite-based aircraft surveillance system.
Adverse oil prices and cut-throat rivalry have left airlines scrambling to limit losses with the increasingly attractive option of jet-fuel hedging. Although a complex exercise, hedging essentially involves locking in a forward fixed price, allowing an increasing number of airlines to avoid surprises from unforeseen cost fluctuations. Today, jet-fuel hedgers trade contracts in Singapore, Rotterdam, the U.S. Gulf Coast or New York, as well as crude and heating oil or gas oil in London and New York, the two most liquid swaps and options markets.
Jet Aviation St. Louis has become the first company to install Honeywell’s DU-875 flightdeck upgrade in an Embraer Legacy 600. “A team of technicians has been trained to support the [Legacy] airframe,” said Chuck Krugh, senior vice president and general manager of Jet Aviation St. Louis. “We have increased tooling, parts and other materials needed to support the aircraft.” The company recently received approval for DU-875 installations in the Legacy 650 as well.
On Tuesday, Boeing and Aviation Capital Services, a subsidiary of the State Corporation Russian Technologies (Rostech), announced a commitment by Rostech to purchase 35 737 Max narrow bodies. The transaction, valued at $3.5 billion at current list price, represents the first commitment for the 737 Max from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings (Booth No. 4547) has launched a new website to assist aircraft coatings specifiers and paint applicators with what it calls one of the most detailed online information sources in the aircraft coatings industry. The aerospace unit of paint giant Sherwin-Williams is demonstrating to convention-goers how the revamped website is easy to maneuver and provides more connectivity for visitors.
It’s a simple concept: if you can flight plan a higher altitude to use during an overwater emergency, then you might not need as much extra fuel to reach an alternate airport. Most airlines and business jet operators flight plan for an emergency altitude of 10,000 feet, because supplemental oxygen isn’t needed at that altitude, when flying from the equal-time point to an alternate airport.
Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings (Booth No. 4547), located in Andover, Kan., introduced several new products during NBAA’12. Its new urethane primer and sanding surfacer (CM0481827) can double as either a traditional sanding surfacer or as a primer. MROs and paint shops can now use one product for two purposes. And the product dries twice as fast as traditional epoxy surfacer technologies. The corrosion-inhibitive urethane primer is also chromate hazard-free and is intended for use on all aircraft.
Duncan Aviation of Lincoln, Neb. (Booth No. 5580), a provider of airframe inspections, engine maintenance, cabin and cockpit systems retrofits, painting and interior work, as well as pre-owned aircraft sales and acquisitions, has acquired several examples of a dry-ice blasting machine to accomplish a specific service bulletin for its Bombardier Challenger customers.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt, a Germany-based aerospace think tank, has outlined its vision of an electrically powered, emission-free airliner–relying on batteries–that it believes could be in service by 2035. The most obvious aspect of the design is a C-shaped wing for greater lift. Another major feature is the use of superconductivity for better power transmission and greater motor power density.
