The Solar Impulse project recently received a burst of sunshine in the form of financial support from a commercial insurance firm, bolstering the team’s plans to complete the world’s first global circumnavigation by a piloted, solar-powered aircraft.
Timco Aerosystems’ new dynamic sled test facility in Wallburg, N.C., has received FAA approval for the testing of aircraft seats to show compliance with regulatory codes 14CFR25.562 and 14CFR23.562. The approval enables Timco to test seats for compliance with critical occupant safety impact standards, including 16-g horizontal and 14-g vertical structural thresholds.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt, a Germany-based aerospace think tank, has outlined its vision of an electrically powered, emission-free airliner–relying on batteries–that it believes could be in service by 2035. The most obvious aspect of the design is a C-shaped wing for greater lift. Another major feature is the use of superconductivity for better power transmission and greater motor power density.
Night Flight Concepts (NFC) is offering laser defense training online. The one-hour course is available to law enforcement and other first responders for $95 and to other students for $125 through the company’s website: www.nightflightconcepts.com. Upon finishing the course, students take an online quiz and can print a certificate of completion.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority reported last week that the incidence of laser pointers being aimed at aircraft in that country’s airspace is on the rise, mostly during takeoff and landing. Last year 175 incidents were recorded. So far this year there have been 170, indicating a higher total for 2012.
The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive for certain Bombardier Challenger 300s as a result of reports of deformation found at the neck of the pressure regulator body on the oxygen cylinder and regulator assembly (CRA). It requires an inspection to determine if a specified oxygen CRA is installed and to replace affected oxygen CRAs.
The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive for all Honeywell ALF502L-2C; ALF502R-3; ALF502R-3A; ALF502R-5; LF507-1F; and LF507-1H turbofans. The AD was prompted by two reports of engines experiencing uncontained release of low-pressure (LP) turbine blades. The AD requires operational checks of the engine overspeed trip system to prevent LP turbine overspeed, which could lead to uncontained release of the LP turbine blades and damage to the airplane.
The FAA released Advisory Circular 120-76B late last week, updating the “Guidelines for the Certification, Airworthiness and Operational Use of Portable Electronic Flight Bags.” Naturally, much of the interest surrounding the updated AC involves how it applies to tablet computers such as the Apple iPad, which has gained a huge following among pilots in all segments of aviation.
Smac Aero of Toulon, France, continues to develop new technology aimed at reducing aircraft cabin noise and promoted its full line of noise-reduction technology in Cannes, France.
Among the latest items is the SmacBarrier, an acoustic layer designed to reduce the transmission of sound generated around window trim panels, flooring and ceiling panels.
Also fresh off the development line is SmacFoam, specifically created to reduce sound transmission and provide sound absorption in smaller, confined spaces.
