Following the bankruptcy of ExelTech Aerospace, Bombardier is purchasing the company’s Saint-Laurent facilities. The acquisition will increase Bombardier’s Global completion center capabilities for its Global 5000 and Global Express XRS. “We have had plans to expand our completions capacity in Montreal and this situation presented a good opportunity to do it.
Bombardier Global Express
In mid-April, Midcoast Aviation senior v-p of green completions Rodger Renaud described business at the East Cahokia, Ill.-based maintenance and operations facility as “certainly better now than [at] this time last year.” Slightly more than a month later, on May 26, the company announced the layoff of 80 employees.
Bombardier has entered the detail-design phase in the development of its “clean-sheet” all-composite Learjet 85 and remains on track for an entry-into-service date of 2013. Once certified, the aircraft will become the first all-composite Part 25 business jet.
Bombardier and Honeywell have received a supplemental type certificate (STC) to install Primus Elite LCD cockpit upgrades on Global series business jets. The cockpit upgrade for the Global 5000, Global Express and Global Express XRS is available as a retrofit or, on new aircraft, as an option.

The EASA has approved Amac Aerospace Switzerland to perform line and base maintenance as well as interior refurbishments and modifications on the Global Express, Global Express XRS and Global 5000. The operation is also certified for base and line maintenance on the Gulfstream large-cabin series, Airbus A320 single-aisle series, Boeing BBJ series and line maintenance for the Boeing (McDonnell Douglas)MD-80 series.
Bombardier is under commercial pressure to launch a new flagship business jet to rival the Gulfstream G650 as the world’s industry descends on what is the key event for the leading large-bizjet-buying region. With its significant range advantage, the G650 looks to be set to beat Bombardier’s leading model–the Global Express XRS– hands down when it enters service in 2012.
The business aircraft charter market is down by at least 15 percent this year, but VistaJet (Stand E540) expects to achieve 20-percent growth for 2009, and it wants to establish a more permanent presence here in the Middle East through a local partner that would help it to connect with prospective charter clients. It is investigating options to expand into markets such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
The first Bombardier Global Express 8C check has been performed in Europe by Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services (LBAS), a joint venture of Lufthansa Technik, Bombardier and ExecuJet.
The work included dismantling the aircraft’s cabin, overhauling the landing gear and inspecting and modifying structures and systems. The Berlin-based MRO, which specializes in Bombardier business aircraft, completed the project in eight weeks.
