Satcom1, a satellite communications service provider, announced the recent activation of its AvioIP advanced router software on an Emteq eConnect airborne router installed on a Bombardier Global Express. This upgrade, installed by Ruag Aerospace Services, was certified by EASA and validated by the FAA and Transport Canada, according to Satcom1, “the first-ever installation of such advanced features on [the] Global Express.”
The FAA issued Jeppesen a letter of operational suitability that allows the Apple iPad mini to be used in cockpits at commercial operators when the device is paired with Jeppesen’s electronic flight bag (EFB) solutions. This letter covers both the iPad mini with and without the Retina display. The FAA process was conducted to provide assurance for pilots and aviation operators that Jeppesen data, when displayed on the 7.9-inch iPad mini screen, is acceptable for use.
Gama Aviation has received approval from the UK CAA for flight crews to use Apple iPads for flight-planning and airborne chart purposes when flying G-registered aircraft. Gama pilots will use iPads equipped with Jeppesen’s Mobile FliteDeck app. The iPads also feature the Airwatch Secure Content Locker, “a cloud-based library publication system that allows crews to download and manage operational flight-deck documents,” according to Gama. So far 22 Gama pilots are trained to use the iPad EFBs, which also contain operating manuals, reference handbooks and checklists.
Garmin’s Virb Elite action camera now integrates with the Garmin Pilot iPad/iPhone app, which can not only control the camera but also displays a live view of the video being recorded by the camera. The integration with Garmin Pilot (version 6.0 or later) is available only with the Virb Elite, not with the regular Virb.
Jet Support Services, which provides hourly cost aircraft maintenance programs, has begun a new phase of improvements to its customer portal, MyJSSI. Enhancements include simplified navigation, a cleaner submit flight hours page, better contacts integration and a new minimum flight hours calculator. JSSI customers can access MyJSSI from their computers, or through an app on their tablets and smartphones.
Just in time for the Heli-Expo show, the United States Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) announced an app–I Fly Safe–that will provide helicopter pilots and operators with expert safety information. The app will offer access to a library of the latest safety bulletins, essays, fact sheets and videos, as well as a link to the new www.USHST.org website. I Fly Safe can be used on iPads, iPhones and Android phones and will be available from the Apple Store on February 24.
Singapore-based training company Mil-Com Aerospace and Chennai, India-headquartered Ramco Systems, part of the $1 billion U.S. Ramco Group, a leading software company focused on products and managed services, have entered into a partnership to complement their offerings. Mil-Com focuses on proving technical training on diverse modules in the aviation sector using Ramco’s Aviation Suite to address business “pain” points to its member base.
Making its first standalone appearance at an international airshow here in Singapore, software giant Microsoft (Booth E63) will promote a variety of software and hardware solutions for airline passengers, staff and pilots.
“The key for us and the reason why we’re engaging at the airshow is because we’ve been doing a lot of work over the past few years in the airline space and we see airlines as a tremendous opportunity for Microsoft,” said Matthew Muta, the company’s global managing director for hospitality and travel.
Radenna is taking orders for its newest dual-band ADS-B receiver, which also contains attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) sensors. The new SkyRadar DX retails for $899, but Radenna is selling the first 50 for $649. Deliveries begin on March 20. The SkyRadar-DX works on both ADS-B in frequencies, 1090 and 978 MHz, so it can receive traffic information from both bands and free weather information on 978 MHz.
