Garmin’s G3X glass display is now available in a touchscreen version, the GDU 465 G3X Touch, designed for the experimental and light sport aircraft markets. The 10.6-inch GDU 465, like Garmin’s GTC 570 touchscreen controllers in G2000 through G5000 cockpits, employs infrared touchscreen technology. G3X Touch was designed by Garmin’s Team X experimental engineering team, a group of pilots and homebuilders.
Avionics manufacturer Dynon has developed “The New SkyView,” a touchscreen-controlled integrated avionics system with touch-control primary and multifunction displays. “We’ve been keeping it a secret for quite a while,” said Dynon marketing manager Michael Schofield. The new SkyView Touch displays begin delivering in April, he said, and by the end of July when EAA AirVenture Oshkosh opens, he expects a number of experimental aircraft to be equipped with New SkyView systems, which also includes two new knob control panels and a major software upgrade for all SkyView systems.
Heads Up Technologies (Booth No. 1421) has signed a content distribution agreement with Red Touch Media to provide access to an extensive library of digital content through Heads Up’s fiber-optic-based Lumin cabin management system and wireless media server.

French electronics provider PGA Electronics is introducing its new Smart Touch Cabin, a wireless software application that allows passengers to control cabin functions from any point in the cabin using Apple mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone. The customized interface, according to the company, allows control of most aspects of the cabin, from lighting and entertainment to electric shades.
In mid-July, Bombardier made a flight-test Learjet 40 available to demonstrate the capabilities of the Garmin G5000 integrated flight deck that is a key feature in the new Learjet 70 and 75. This Learjet 40 is one of two flight-test articles flying in the 70/75 program and the first jet to fly with Garmin’s first Part 25 avionics suite, which is branded as the Vision cockpit for the Learjet application and the first Part 25 avionics system with touchscreen control.
The Aircraft Electronics Association has begun distributing its free updated Pilot’s Guide to Avionics, which helps avionics buyers understand new technology and find qualified avionics shops for installations and repairs. This year’s guide covers new avionics, training, combined vision systems, electronic engine instruments, the growing use of touchscreens in cockpit displays, ADS-B, electronic flight bags, tablet computers, Waas GPS and audio panels. AgustaWestland signed agreements yesterday at the Farnborough International airshow with three key suppliers for its AW609 civil tiltrotor. These major agreements follow a trail of contracts signed with AW609 component suppliers since AgustaWestland acquired the tiltrotor program last November.

Denver-based JetTech received STC approval to install Garmin G600 avionics with dual flat-panel displays in the Piper Cheyenne III, IIIA and 400LS. The upgrade includes dual G600 RVSM primary instrumentation, with RVSM-capable air data computers.
