The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a team yesterday to assist with the investigation into Saturday’s accident in Georgetown, Guyana, involving a Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800 that broke in two after overshooting the runway at Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The airplane crashed through a chain-link fence and came to rest on a dirt road that ran adjacent to a deep ravine.

Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport is now closed to general aviation and non-scheduled commercial traffic between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. The airport, which recently obtained civil certification, formerly received infrastructure support from the U.S. military for 24/7 ATC operations and aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF).

Rizon Jet recently opened its long-planned FBOs at London’s Biggin Hill Airport and Doha International Airport. Both the UK and Qatar facilities will provide handling support and they plan to extend their maintenance portfolios. Both facilities have been designed expressly to meet the preferences of the growing number of Middle Eastern business aircraft users.

NBAA and the Shanghai Airport Authority (SAA) finalized a five-year agreement that guarantees the Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (Abace) will be held at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. The deal was initially struck between the parties at Ebace in May.

U.S.-based aviation services provider Tempus Jets has partnered with the government of Rwanda to establish a stronger private aviation presence in the region. The Newport News, Va. company announced plans to establish FBO services at Kigali International Airport as well as position a number of turbine-powered aircraft there for on-demand charter use.

Jet Aviation has made several key personnel changes. Johannes Turzer, formerly v-p and general manager at Jet Aviation Dusseldorf, is now v-p and accountable manager of maintenance services at Jet Aviation Basel. Sebastian Groeger, v-p and general manager at Jet Aviation Singapore, will succeed Turzer at Dusseldorf. Philippe Crevier has moved into the v-p and general manager spot at Jet Aviation Singapore.

Possibly recognizing that the July 1 final report on GPS testing showed that interference was worse than predicted, LightSquared lawyers are now bypassing the FCC and submitting technical papers directly to the UN’s International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva, according to published reports.
