The FAA issued a Special FAR on Friday that prohibits “certain flight operations” in a portion of the Simferopol Flight Information Region (FIR) by all U.S. airlines and commercial operators, and–with narrow exceptions–those with a U.S. airman certificate and operators of U.S.-registered civil aircraft.
While the FAA mandate to install ADS-B OUT equipment for aircraft flying in U.S. airspace by Jan. 1, 2020 (above 10,000 feet or in Class B or C airspace) is more than six years away, aircraft operating in some countries’ airspace must be compliant starting in December.
The European Commission is taking to task the vast majority of its 27 nation states for their lack of progress in forging the Single European Sky through a program to unify regional airspace.
Inefficiencies caused by Europe’s fragmented airspace generate extra costs of close to €5 billion each year, adding 42 kilometers (27 miles) to the distance of an average flight, and forcing aircraft to burn more fuel, generate more emissions, pay more in user charges and incur delays. The U.S. controls the same amount of airspace, with more traffic, at almost half the cost.
The Single European Sky ATM Research Joint Undertaking (SJU) has issued a call for proposals from industry to participate in remotely piloted air system (RPAS) demonstration activities.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Airbus ProSky, the air traffic management (ATM) subsidiary of Airbus, signed an agreement to study a restructuring of UAE airspace intended to improve air traffic flows in the strategic crossroads region. The agreement calls for Airbus ProSky to deliver a “comprehensive report” this summer.
With an eye to increased air traffic with soccer’s FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016, Brazil’s air navigation service provider DECEA (Departamento de Control do Espaço Aéreo) is upgrading its technology.
The FAA issued airspace restrictions in the Charlotte, N.C., area for the upcoming Democratic National Convention that closely resemble those currently in effect for the RNC in Tampa, Fla. The DNC Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) will be in effect for the Charlotte, N.C., area September 3 to 6. The DNC TFR will also be deemed “National Defense Airspace,” which means violators might be exposing themselves to deadly force should they pose an imminent security threat.
The Senate likely will take up a pair of amendments to the $52 billion federal highway bill (S.1813) beginning tomorrow that, if passed, would negatively affect the helicopter taxi and tour business nationwide.
More airspace will be opening for general aviation flights in China, according to NBAA. Initial airspace reforms in the flight control areas of Changchun and Guangzhou were completed late last year, and now the People’s Liberation Army Air Force is working to expand these flight control areas further, as well as the flight control sub-areas of Chengdu, Lanzhou, Jinan and Nanjing.
Brazil’s Departmento de Controle do Escaço Aéreo (DECEA, Department of Airspace Control) has decided to deploy Jeppesen’s total airspace and airport modeler (TAAM) software at its newly created simulator laboratory in São Jose dos Campos, Brazil. Jeppesen will provide advice and user support to ensure DECEA receives the full benefit from its investment. This includes installation, commission, system testing and training.
