Northern Virginia businessman and helicopter pilot Scott Kasprowicz, along with copilot Steve Sheik, broke the New York to Los Angeles transcontinental rotorcraft speed record on February 16. He flew his AgustaWestland A109S Grand (registration N1US) from Sheltair Aviation at New York La Guardia Airport to Landmark Aviation at Los Angeles International Airport in 15 hours, 9 minutes and 10 seconds, besting the previous record set in 1985 of 19 hours and 16 seconds. Kasprowicz averaged 141.3 knots on the 2,139.8-nm journey and made six fuel stops along the way.
At press time, he and Sheik planned to fly N1US to Houston to be formally recognized by AgustaWestland at Heli-Expo.  Kasprowicz’s next record attempt will be a “less than 17-day around-the-world flight” in N1US this summer.
