Former FAA Administrator J. Lynn Helms died on December 11 at age 86. Appointed FAA Administrator by President Ronald Reagan, Helms served for nearly three years through January 1984. He was an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and a graduate of the Navy Test Pilot School. Key events during his FAA tenure included the 1981 Patco controller strike, the downing of Korean Air Flight 007 by the Soviet Union and a strategic plan that answered President Reagan’s request to “modernize our nation’s air transportation system and make it the safest and most efficient in the world.”
