U.S. Airports Garner Help with Upcoming Safety Regulations

The FAA is expected to mandate a safety management system (SMS) for all Part 139 airports by late summer or early fall of 2012 affecting approximately 540 U.S. commercial-service airports.

Three groups – SITA, JDA and Intelex – have partnered up to provide an SMS product to ensure airport compliance with the regulation’s demands.

An SMS uses a safety risk management (SRM) process that, when coupled with the appropriate technologies, delivers airport managers regularly updated data on safety concerns and solutions at subscribing airports. Airports will have 18 to 24 months to design and implement a SMS and the required safety manual after the rule’s effective date.
