Winglet Technology and Cessna Aircraft have begun installing elliptical winglets on the Citation X. Since receiving an FAA supplemental type certificate for the installation of the distinctive elliptical winglets in June, Cessna has installed retrofit kits on five Cessna Citation Xs at its Wichita service center. The company received Transport Canada and ANAC (Brazilian) approval, too, and is also pursuing EASA and Australian approval. The STC retrofit kit includes flight and operations manual supplements, along with an updated version of CessNav for customers who have purchased that subscription service. Cessna says the elliptical winglet shape provides superior aerodynamic performance across a broad range of Mach numbers by significantly reducing the induced drag of the aircraft. Gary Genge, contracts manager at Cessna’s Wichita Service Center, told AIN that the kit is priced at $415,000; installation costs $178,000 and requires four weeks of down time. “Plans are under way to offer installation of the elliptical winglet on the Citation X at all nine Cessna-owned service centers located throughout the U.S. and in Europe,” Genge said.
