Avfuel dealer FirstFlight is building a new chain, starting with two FBOs at Pennsylvania’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport and Garden City, Kan. FirstFlight also manages the Tech Aviation FBO at Niagara Falls International Airport in New York. In addition to FBO services, FirstFlight offers charter/management, aircraft sales and acquisition consulting and jet maintenance.

Mercury Air Group signed a letter of intent to take on the management contract for a new FBO at Kuwait International Airport. Jet Aviation had announced plans to open an FBO in Kuwait in 2004 but revealed to AIN late last year that it had discontinued those plans. The Mercury project is in cooperation with Kuwait’s United Projects, the company behind the previously planned Jet Aviation FBO.

New chain Encore FBO now has four bases, having purchased Business Aviation Services of Sioux Falls, S.D., late last year. Encore’s other U.S. location is Addison, Texas, where it has a management agreement to operate facilities and provide fuel. In Europe, Encore FBO bought two FBOs, Euralair at Paris Le Bourget and FBO Dublin in Ireland. An Encore spokeswoman told AIN, “We’re working on getting the fueling rights” in Dublin.

Avitat Westchester opened its newly renovated Westchester County Airport FBO in January. Featuring a two-story 21,000-sq-ft terminal fronted by a glass canopy, Avitat Westchester’s lobby welcomes visitors with five column-shaped tropical fish aquariums and the new Café du Grand Fromage (the big cheese café). Piano music wafts throughout the lobby’s glass-canopied atrium on a Sony Disklavier automated baby grand.

Chicago-area FBO and maintenance/avionics company J.A. Air Center is building a 108,000-sq-ft facility at Aurora Municipal Airport. The company also operates an FBO at DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport. The $20 million Aurora facility includes more than 60,000 sq ft of clear-span hangar space and 50,000 sq ft of office space.

Heinz Kohli, who in May 2003 was named CEO of Jet Aviation Group, abruptly decided to leave the company “effective immediately.” In revealing this development today, officials of the Zurich-based worldwide business aviation services conglomerate would not comment beyond saying, “Differences over the company’s future strategy” led Kohli to resign.

Jet Aviation is preparing to open a new executive terminal at Germany's Dusseldorf Airport by the end of this year. The Swiss-based group, which won a competition against seven other companies to build the 4,305-sq-ft facility, plans to start construction next month. Jet Aviation has operated an FBO from somewhat limited premises there for several years.

Co-owner and general manager of Aspen Base Operation Cliff Runge expects to close on a deal today or tomorrow to sell the FBO at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field) to Trajen FBO Network, the growing chain backed by private equity firm CapStreet. The Aspen location would be the 18th for Trajen.

It's a landmark event for Garrett/Piedmont Hawthorne/Associated (GHPA). The services once provided by the well known and respected names of engine and airframe maintenance firm Garrett Aviation, FBO chain of Piedmont Hawthorne and large aircraft completions center Associated Air Center are reemerging under the new identity of Landmark Aviation.

Jet Aviation is working on plans to establish an FBO in Moscow, offering handling as well as business aircraft charter and management. The U.S.-based group’s Swiss division is running the project and it hopes to have an FBO operational at one of the airports in the Russian capital before year-end.
