Guardian Jet Center, a one-year-old FBO at Ontario International Airport, Calif., has apparently outgrown its 24,000-sq-ft hangar and current terminal. The company recently broke ground for an additional 22,000-sq-ft hangar expected to be completed early this month. A larger terminal is expected to be built by early next year.

The BBA Group has added yet another European business aircraft handling operation to its Signature Flight Support chain with the December 8 acquisition of FBO Shannon on the west coast of Ireland. BBA purchased the FBO from its private owners for $3 million (E2.5 million).

Bob Walesch since 1984 has held senior positions with four major FBOs and spearheaded the launches of two of them that are located on medium-size business-aviation airports near warm oceans. He’s now the v-p and general manager of the brand-new Avitat Boca Raton (Fla.), which opened late last year.

The turn of the new year has seen several new facilities opening in time for the winter season.

• In Oakland, Calif., the Business Jet Center had its grand opening on December 1. The FBO terminal is the old airline passenger terminal on the historic airport, and the art deco motif used in the renovation reflects its history.

With three major storms in three weeks (and winter far from over), the Denver area has not only had its share of snow this season but seems also to be hogging all the snow that many other areas of the U.S. expect. Ski slopes in parts of the Northeast U.S. have no snow base to speak of and have rarely reached temperatures low enough to make snow.

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) is replacing its annual convention with two new conferences. The FBO Leadership Conference will be held at the same time and place as was planned for the annual convention, March 19 to 22 in Orlando, Fla., and still coincident with the exhibits at the Aviation Industry Expo show (to be held from March 20 to 22).

See www.flightsafety.org/damagecalculator for a new model for estimating the cost of ground accidents. The cost model is the Flight Safety Foundation’s first tool in its Ground Accident Prevention program and it includes direct and indirect costs. The tool should help operators reduce the cost of ground accidents.

Bloomington-Normal Central Illinois Regional Airport is home to Platinum Jet Center BMI’s new FBO, which opened in October. The FBO’s 20,000-sq-ft heated hangar “is the largest hangar in the Midwest,” said vice president and general manager David Schlentner, and is tall enough to accept a BBJ. The FBO is owned by Executive Flight Management and features a pilot lounge, business center, customer offices, a training room and Chevron fuel.
