Completion and refurbishment specialist Flying Colours of Peterborough, Ontario, announced here at NBAA 2014 a joint-venture agreement with China-based Sparkle Roll Technik (SRT), which focuses on business jet cabin modifications and maintenance.

The first project, scheduled to begin by the end of October, will see eight China B-registered Bombardier CRJ-200s (procured by SRT) converted from commuter to executive interiors mirroring the Challenger 850.

Uniontown, Ohio-based Fire Containment Concepts is on hand here at NBAA (Booth 3894) to demonstrate its line of fire-containment bags for lithium-ion batteries. According to the company, its fire-containment product is intended to contain blazes with temperatures of more than 2,200 deg F, as well as a majority of the smoke arising from such a situation. The bags feature an integral fire suppression system that will automatically deploy if a set temperature within the bag is exceeded.

Pilatus and Williams International have been touting some features–passive thrust vectoring and quiet power mode–of the FJ44-4A turbofan on the PC-24 but the engine manufacturer is scarce on details. The so-called Exact passive thrust vectoring system uses “a proprietary fluid dynamic scheme,” Matt Huff, Williams’ business development vice president, told AIN. The thrust vector from the exhaust nozzle varies as a function of engine operating conditions–power setting, exhaust gas temperature, Mach number and altitude.

The U.S. business jet charter market is set to continue its recovery next year, according to projections online charter portal Avinode released this week at NBAA 2014. It predicts 3.5-percent year-over-year growth in charter flights in the U.S. next year. By U.S. region, the South is expected to see gains of 4 percent; West, 3.6 percent; Northeast, 3.3 percent; and Midwest, 2.5 percent.

Flight operations support group Nexus announced the acquisition of aviation risk management and safety audit provider Wyvern Consulting from online charter portal Avinode. In an October 22 announcement, the company also confirmed the appointment of the following three business aviation veterans to Wyvern’s board: former NetJets executive Vincent Santulli, former Beechcraft executive Shawn Vick and former FAA associate administrator Nick Sabatini. Wyvern CEO Art Dawley, an experienced corporate pilot and flight department manager, also has joined the board.

Honeywell demonstrated control of its Ovation Select cabin management system with Google Glass this week at NBAA 2014. The demonstration is part of a new rapid-prototyping effort under way at Honeywell to develop products and features.

Airbus Helicopters received EASA certification for its upgraded EC135T3/P3 light twin, a model that was announced at Heli-Expo last year. Powered by a pair of Turbomeca Arrius 2B2 Plus (T3) or Pratt & Whitney Canada PW206B3 (P3) turboshafts, the new version of the EC135 offers 440 pounds more payload in hot-and-high conditions.

Indian lawmakers are considering a proposal by the country’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that would revoke the commercial licenses of nonscheduled operator permit (NSOP) holders with fewer than three aircraft available for charter. Affected NSOPs that do not augment their fleet to at least three aircraft within one year will have to operate in the private category, depriving them of permission to offer charters.

Last week the FAA and its partners in the NextGen Advisory Committee submitted a plan to Congress to accelerate the implementation of NextGen ATC procedures. The NextGen Priorities Joint Implementation Plan seeks approval to begin the rollout of NextGen’s advanced features and introduce the benefits they produce.
