A proliferation of large wind farms in recent years has posed a new challenge to both air traffic control and the renewable energy industry. The rotating blades of wind turbines can appear as false aircraft returns on air traffic and other radars. This clutter can lead to radars becoming de-sensitized in the area of the wind farms, resulting in genuine aircraft tracks being all too easily lost. This phenomenon has already prevented or delayed the establishment of new wind farms due to objections from aviation authorities.

Troy, Michigan-based AGM Aerospace is launching an international supply chain collaborative here at FIA 2014. The collaborative is designed to bring Tier 1 through 5 suppliers together to “collaborate on a new methodology,” according to AGM director of aerospace Gavin Brown, “to take the cost out of the cost, using the aggregate demand model.”

The plan is to share information on a cloud-based platform to facilitate digital manufacturing. This will include engineering, modeling, simulation, production and delivery of finished components.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) conducted the first flight of its Predator XP remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) on June 27 at the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground range complex in Arizona. The Predator XP is an unarmed export version of the iconic RPA.

Cobham Satcom has announced two new Aviator 300 supplemental type certificate (STC) approvals and introduced the Aviator 200S, which features a new compact antenna.

The Aviator 300 received an FAA STC for installation on the Airbus A319, A320 and A321. The STC was developed by Avionics Support Group on an ACJ319 business jet. The company plans to add EASA and Chinese CAAC STCs for the Airbuses as well.

Bombardier Aerospace continues to breathe new life into its NextGen CRJ series aircraft, underscored here at the Farnborough Airshow by the CRJ900 on static display, ready for delivery to American Airlines-the fourth of 30 ordered by the US carrier last year. Sylvain Leclerc, v-p and general manager, CRJ Commercial Aircraft, said the “new and improved interior configuration will enhance the passenger experience,” while aerodynamic clean-ups and weight saving efforts have boosted the aircraft’s operational efficiency.

TAG Farnborough Airport awarded the TAG Flying Scholarship 2014 to 17-year-old James Peter Singh. The scholarship covers training towards a national private pilot license at Blackbushe Airport.

TAG’s scholarship is one of the tools that the company uses to inform local school and college students about aviation, as part of TAG’s Aviation to Education program. The flying experience provided in the scholarship is facilitated by TAG Farnborough Airport and the Air League Educational Trust.
