Bell Helicopter’s Jet Ranger X

Bell Helicopter is stepping up efforts to bring its “short light single” helicopter to market, having formally unveiled the new model as the 505 Jet Ranger X at the Heli-Expo show in Anaheim, California, in February. Here at ABACE, the company is exhibiting with its Chinese distributor Aerochine (Booth P529) and is also promoting its new twin-engine Bell 525.

VistaJet

VistaJet expects to have its new operation in China up and running by the end of 2014 if it achieves its goal of getting its local air operators certificate approved by early in the fourth quarter of this year. Ahead of this week’s ABACE show, the Europe-based private flight provider was giving no further details of its local partnership arrangements for the China operation, but it has previously been in discussion with Beijing Airlines.

Some 200 companies will be exhibiting at the three-day Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (ABACE), which starts next Tuesday at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. Organized by NBAA in partnership with the Shanghai Airport Authority, the event will be located once more at the Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Centre–a joint venture between the Shanghai Airport Authority and Hawker Pacific–with the Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA) co-hosting the event.

Cessna 206 seaplanes

Indian charter operator Maritime Energy Heli Air Services (Mehair) is launching a new seaplane operation to connect the center of the country’s commercial capital Mumbai with the affluent Aamby Valley area. The charter flights, operated with four-seat Cessna 206 amphibians, started last month and early advance bookings have convinced the company to add a nine-seat Cessna 208 aircraft by the end of May.

The European Commission plans to set “tough new standards” to regulate the operation of UAVs, known as remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) in Europe, before they are more widely introduced into unrestricted airspace in 2016. The standards will cover safety, security, privacy, data protection, insurance and liability, the commission said.

Joy Jets Embraer Phenom 300

Embraer recently delivered the first Phenom 300 to India. Customer Kerala-based Joy Jets will operate the light jet alongside its existing Phenom 100. The operator, which is part of the Joyalukkas chain of jewelry stores, has said it intends to add a longer-range midsize aircraft to its fleet next year.

In its recommendations for improving general aviation in India, an ICAO-led group has recommended to India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) include: Fully implementing a safety management system and ensure the industry is fully compliant; hiring and training sufficient qualified technical and administrative staff to carry out its obligations, and removing the pilot experience requirements for nonscheduled operators that require 500 hours, including 25 hours in type.

With general aviation regulations in India caught up in a web of complex rules, the industry has expressed a need for a stable regulatory framework that would allow it to grow in a sound, more straightforward regulatory regime. Addressing this, an ICAO-led group drafted a set of recommendations for a policy on general aviation–including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and seaplanes–and submitted them to the Ministry of Civil Aviation in April 2012.

Learjet 85 first flight

The Bombardier Learjet 85 successfully completed its maiden flight yesterday, marking the beginning of the all-composite midsize jet’s flight-test program. Flight-test vehicle one (FTV1) lifted off from Wichita Mid Continent International Airport yesterday at 8:19 a.m. CST.
