The Skyway Center, a new general aviation hangar complex at San Francisco Bay-area San Carlos Airport (KSQL), has now opened. The project, which took more than two-and-a-half years to complete, including environmental studies and permitting, was built by West Coast aviation construction firm Centrex.

KSQL has a runway length of 2,620 feet and the new development is aimed at the owner-flown community. The complex includes nine hangars ranging in size from 2,000 sq ft up to 9,000 sq ft, featuring extensive natural lighting and electrically operated bifold doors. They are capable of sheltering turboprops and light jets and each is named after a pioneering woman aviator: from Harriet Quimby, the first woman to fly the English Channel; to the iconic Amelia Earhart; to Bessie Coleman, the first African-American woman to receive a pilot license. More recent examples include Jeana Yeager and Christa McAuliffe.

In addition, the location offers 20,000 sq ft of leasable office space, conference, and event facilities—and a members-only lounge.

According to the site operator, “aircraft hangars are too often seen simply as a ‘cost of airplane ownership,’ as opposed to an amenity within a welcoming, club-like atmosphere that complements the aviator’s lifestyle.”
