James Gormley, a retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general, decorated fighter pilot and president of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) in 1990 and 1991, died after a long struggle with cancer. After retiring from the Air Force in 1979, Gormley served as v-p of legislative affairs for GAMA from 1981 to 1990. As the association’s chief lobbyist, he was instrumental in getting legislation passed that adopted limits on general aviation product liability and defeating a bill that would have placed a 10-percent luxury tax on new business aircraft.
