A lifelong aviation enthusiast who joined&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;in 2007, Curt came to&nbsp;the publication&nbsp;from the broadcast industry where he was a national science and technology television reporter and producer. He writes on the FBO field, aviation finance, and sustainable aviation and occasionally contributes to&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;sister publication&nbsp;Business Jet Traveler. Curt was a member of the AINtv reporting staff that won the 2008 Aerospace Journalist of the Year award for Best Airshow Daily. That same year, he was a finalist for another AJOYA award. He earned an AJOYA for Best Business Aviation Submission in 2018 and was a finalist in that category in 2021. He received the National Air Transportation Association’s&nbsp; Aviation Journalist Award in 2012 and won a Pegasus Sapphire Business Aviation Award for outstanding journalism in 2021.
Before joining AIN, Curt worked with&nbsp;Consumer Reports’ television division, CRTV, and for several local television news staffs. An honors graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he earned a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University in 1995. With operators looking to meet the FAA’s mandate for ADS-B equipage by 2020, Universal Avionics points out that its SBAS-FMS flight management system qualifies as an approved Arinc A743A position source required for compliance. It interfaces with all ADS-B transponders including commonly used models such as the Honeywell RCZ-8XX series and Rockwell Collins TDR-94D. “With the U.S. mandate less than five years away, now is the time to upgrade to have more flexibility and avoid the installation traffic and increased downtime,” noted Dan Reida, Universal’s vice president of sales and marketing.
The Tucson, Ariz.-based company (Booth 4655) also announced that its AHS-525 Attitude Heading Reference System is undergoing helicopter vibration testing on its way to TSO approval. A single AHS-525 unit will replace multiple line replaceable units found in a typical aircraft installation, offering a reduction in LRU footprint, weight, wiring and power requirements, which will help in retrofit situations according to the manufacturer.
Finally, in partnership with Howell Instruments, the company has completed the first round of data acquisition unit testing for use in the InSight Integrated Flight Deck, which was rolled out last October at NBAA 2014. Launch customer MD Helicopters will use the cockpit suite in its next-generation Explorer.
