The FAA proposes to raise the altitude from the current FL350 to FL410 at which at least one pilot is required to don an oxygen mask for commuter and on-demand charter operations, and revise the pilot oxygen mask requirements applicable to general aviation operations in pressurized aircraft. “FAA found that at higher altitudes, pressurization events in modern business aircraft are rare,” said the agency. Adopting these proposals would reduce oxygen usage by aircraft flying between the current and proposed flight level thresholds, generating savings of between $100 to $400 per fill-up. In addition, the proposed changes would more closely align the regulations with ICAO standards. The current FL250 for single-pilots to wear an oxygen mask in Part 135 operations will be changed to FL350, if a quick-donning mask is available. Part 91 pilots would not be required to wear an oxygen mask at any altitude, as long as a quick-donning mask is available. Comments on the proposal are due by Nov. 23, 2026.
