Under a proposed airworthiness directive (AD), operators of U.S.-registered helicopters that have not demonstrated radio-altimeter interference tolerance would have to revise their rotorcraft flight manuals to restrict certain operations before flying in Canadian airspace. In March, Transport Canada notified the FAA that beginning July 1, changes in 5G lower C-band protection mitigations resulted in a more severe 5G interference environment in Canadian airspace. Exclusion and protection zones at airports no longer exist, and reduced spurious emissions only protect rotorcraft that are radio altimeter interference-tolerant. The FAA emphasized, “The change in mitigations will result in an unsafe condition in the Canadian 5G interference environment.” Comments on the proposed AD are due by Nov. 23, 2026.
