Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

Boom Supersonic and Rolls-Royce have entered into a so-called engagement agreement to explore the pairing of a Rolls-Royce propulsion system with Boom's proposed supersonic passenger aircraft called Overture, the companies announced Thursday.

 


In a statement, Boom said the agreement calls for the companies to work together to identify the propulsion system that would complement Boom's Overture airframe. Apart from studies associated with matching the engine and airframe, the teams will also examine certain “key” aspects of the propulsion system, the statement said. Specifically, they will investigate whether Rolls can adapt an existing engine architecture for supersonic flight, while Boom's internal team continues to develop the airframe configuration.

 


"We've had a series of valuable collaborations and co-locations with Rolls-Royce over the past years to lay the groundwork for this next phase of development," said&nbsp;Blake Scholl, Boom founder and CEO. "We look forward to building on the progress and rapport that we've already built with our collaboration as we work to refine Overture's design and bring sustainable supersonic transport to passenger travel."

 


The companies stressed that they recognize the need for supersonic passenger travel to help meet a “net-zero carbon future,” adding that the two teams will work together to address sustainability in Overture design and operations.
