Boeing saw net order totals increase for the fourth straight month in May while deliveries remain suppressed due largely to the latest pause in 787 deliveries and continuing efforts to fix an electrical grounding problem in the 737 Max flight deck. Posting figures on its website Tuesday, Boeing ended the month with net orders for 20 airplanes, raising the total for the year to 97. The company delivered just 17 airplanes during the month, including two 787s and eleven 737s.
While the order figures far outpace those of rival Airbus, whose total for the year remains in negative territory, the European airframer delivered 50 airplanes during May, raising its annual total to 220 airplanes, compared with Boeing’s 111.
Boeing’s biggest sales for May came from Southwest Airlines, which converted options on 34 Max 7s to firm orders for delivery in 2022. With orders for 13 Maxs from Alaska Airlines and 14 from SMBC Aviation Capital, the narrowbody gross order count reached 61 during the month. Boeing also booked new orders for five 787-9s and a single 777 Freighter from Lufthansa and six more 777Fs from unidentified customers.
Major 737 Max de-bookings came from Aeromexico, which canceled delivery of 34, and Norwegian Air Shuttle, which canceled 14. Boeing saw order cancellations for five 787-9s from unidentified customers.
