A lifelong aviation enthusiast who joined&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;in 2007, Curt came to&nbsp;the publication&nbsp;from the broadcast industry where he was a national science and technology television reporter and producer. He writes on the FBO field, aviation finance, and sustainable aviation and occasionally contributes to&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;sister publication&nbsp;Business Jet Traveler. Curt was a member of the AINtv reporting staff that won the 2008 Aerospace Journalist of the Year award for Best Airshow Daily. That same year, he was a finalist for another AJOYA award. He earned an AJOYA for Best Business Aviation Submission in 2018 and was a finalist in that category in 2021. He received the National Air Transportation Association’s&nbsp; Aviation Journalist Award in 2012 and won a Pegasus Sapphire Business Aviation Award for outstanding journalism in 2021.
Before joining AIN, Curt worked with&nbsp;Consumer Reports’ television division, CRTV, and for several local television news staffs. An honors graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he earned a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University in 1995. Airport real estate developer and operator Sky Harbour has been selected as the winner of two redevelopment RFPs at Los Angeles-area business aviation hub Van Nuys Airport (KVNY).&nbsp;The company, which produces turnkey luxury private hangar complexes across the country, was awarded nearly 25 acres of land at the bustling gateway, where, like at most major metropolises, hangar space is at a premium, with a waiting list for aircraft operators seeking aircraft shelter.
Sky Harbour will now engage in lease negotiations with KVNY manager Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) on the two plots of land. The first—on the east side of the field near the FlyAway bus terminal, which links KVNY with Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX)—consists of approximately 15 acres with a large World War II vintage hangar that will be removed, according to the RFP.
The second plot of nine acres on the west side of the airport has several smaller hangars that will also be cleared following the lease expiration of their former operator.
Sky Harbour declined to comment on its plans for the locations or a timeline for the development, but the company is known for developing large hangar campuses composed of individually leased hangars that can accommodate ultra-long-range business jets and have customizable office/living space. The company also provides its own ground-handling teams and, in most cases, fuel farms for tenant use.
Upon the awarding of a lease, this latest announcement would bring the company's tally to 24 airports in the U.S., with nine locations in operation and 15 under development.
